PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team ended its 2010 season on a high-note Fri. afternoon as the Lightning sent its lone graduating senior, Mike Sager off with a 9-0 non-conference victory over Lincoln at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.

Sager, who played for the Lightning in 2006 and 2007 and then rejoined the team this season, scored his second career goal on a penalty kick just before the intermission. He walked off the field at Goldey-Beacom College for the last time with a goal and a 9-0 victory.

The Lightning (4-13) got offensive contributions from everywhere in this game, including its starting goalkeeper Ignacio Farias. The sophomore goalkeeper, who earned his fourth win of the season after posting five saves in a shut-out first half, came on as a field player for the final 21 minutes of action and scored the final goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 78th minute. He finished with three shots, all put on net.

Seven different Lightning players tallied goals. Sophomore forward Ricky Jackson, a scoring machine for Goldey-Beacom since he came back from injury in late September, notched a hat trick for the Lightning as he finished the season with six goals. This marked his second multiple-goal game of the season.

Senior midfielder Chris Casey (who has one more year of eligibility and will return for the Lightning in 2011) pitched in with three assists for the day, sophomore forward Matt Bik recorded a goal and an assist, and junior midfielder Rob Cann also added a goal and an assist.

The team's nine goals were the most scored by GBC since Oct. 25, 2003 when the Lightning defeated Bloomfield, 10-1.

GBC took a season-high 31 shots and put 18 on goal. Lincoln took 16 shots on the day and put seven on net. Farias and freshman Carlos Meinhard (two saves, zero goals allowed) earned a shared shutout victory.

The scoring began with junior Rob Cann's first goal of the season on a shot from about 20 yards out. Casey was credited with the first of his three assists.

Over 20 minutes went by before Jackson scored the first of his three goals in the 26th minute, finishing a cross from Bik. Jackson would tally again a little over six minutes later after some pretty passing by sophomore defender Mariano Olcese and freshman forward Thatcher Howell.

Bik would add a goal on a breakaway about eight minutes later off Cann's third assist of the year. Bik finished the season with nine points on three goals and three assists.

With 12 seconds left in the half, a foul was called on Lincoln inside the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick. Sager came on and booted a shot past Lincoln's Andre Wilkinson for his first goal of the season to put GBC ahead, 5-0.

GBC continued the offensive onslaught in the second half, beginning with Jackson's third goal of the day in the 51st minute after a nice thru ball from Casey.

Almost 10 minutes later, junior Kwame Appiah beat three Lion defenders and the Lincoln keeper and dribbled the ball into the net for his second goal of the year. Appiah's goal put a nice touch on what has been a frustrating, injury-plagued season for the speedy forward who came into the year tied for 8th on the school's all-time goals list.

Freshman Dylan Pepper got into the scoring act in the 67th minute when he scored off yet another Casey feed for GBC's eighth goal of the day.

Farias ended the scoring for the day in the 78th minute when he put home a penalty kick for the first goal of his career. The sophomore goalkeeper, turned field player for the final 21 minutes of this game, had three assists from his goalie position last year and now has five career points.

GBC coasted from that point on and held on to win the season finale, 9-0.
