Boxscore

PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College women's basketball team, led by junior guard Janae Weldon with a game-high 15 points, earned its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win against conference newcomer Concordia College (N.Y.) by a score of 59-45 in what was a very physical game at the Joseph West Jones Center Sat. afternoon.
The Lightning, who improved to 4-8 (1-4 CACC) with the win, had to do so without their leading scorer Jacinda Jones (four points, 11 min.) and key reserve Irene Hudson (seven points, 20 min.) for most of the way as both sustained injuries during the game. Freshman forward Devonne Richardson stepped up big for GBC with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds, and junior guard/forward Amber Gullickson provided a lift off the bench with four points and a game-high three assists.
GBC jumped out to an early 11-2 lead after a layup by Hudson at the 13:50 mark, but the Clippers settled into the game and twice worked their way back within three at 9:49 (11-8) and 8:02 (13-10). The Lightning would score 10 of the next 11 points and take a 23-11 advantage, but four consecutive free-throws right before intermission by Concordia's Brittany Binnie, who scored all eight of her points on perfect 8-for-8 shooting from the stripe for the game, kept the Clippers close as GBC led by just nine, 28-19 at halftime.
Redshirt freshman Ashley Rosario started GBC on a 6-2 run to start the second frame that extended the Lightning lead to 13 at the 14:24 mark, but five straight points by Concordia's Dana Rommel (14 points, four rebounds) brought the Clippers within eight. Gullickson answered for the Lightning with a three-pointer to push the lead back to 11.
The Clippers would pull to within eight twice more, but the host Lightning had an answer each time, never letting Concordia any closer than eight points. Leading 48-39 at 4:36, GBC went on an 8-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to take its largest lead of the game (17) and put the game away with 2:01 left in regulation.
The Lightning's domination on the boards was vital in this game. With a 52-35 rebounding advantage, GBC outscored CC 22-16 in the paint and held an 18-7 advantage in second-chance points. Head coach Jen Carleton's bench was also key as it outscored Concordia's 24-15.
GBC is back in action on Tues., Jan. 12 as the Lightning go on the road for a rematch against Washington Adventist. They beat WAU, 73-31 back on Dec. 3.
