PHILADELPHIA – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team fought hard, but fell on the road at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe, Philadelphia University on Tues. night in straight sets, 25-12, 25-9 and 25-11.
The Lightning (5-11, 2-5 CACC) were led offensively by freshman Monica Dempsey (five kills, five assists, one service ace and 12 digs). Defensively, fifth-year senior Christine Hudock led the team with 15 digs.
GBC had no answer for Philadelphia U.'s Nicole Berkstresser, who had 14 kills and a .571 hitting percentage. The Lady Rams were up to the task defensively, with Celena Rendon and Natalie Amodei teaming up for 31 combined digs.
Dempsey had the Lightning out to a 3-1 lead early with her service, but Rendon led a 6-0 Lady Ram charge to put PU up 7-3. Then, Amodei helped extend the Lady Ram lead to 11-4.
Junior A.J. Hicks tried to rally the Lightning back into the game, scoring three straight service points following a Lady Ram service error, and GBC was within four at 12-8.
But that would be as close as the Lightning would get, as Adrienne Stigura and Mary Mancuso's service led the Lady Rams to a decisive 25-12 win.
In the second set, the two teams traded points early, but with an 11-8 advantage, PU went on a 14-1 run for a 25-9 win.
Dempsey led the Lightning to a quick 4-1 lead, highlighted by a service ace that forced a PU timeout. After the timeout though, the Lady Rams regrouped and started trading points back and forth with the Lightning.
PU steadily pulled away to a 15-11 lead, and then closed out the set and the match on a 10-0 run that included two Rendon service aces for the final two points.
GBC is back in action on Thurs. night at home as the Lightning host CACC foe Georgian Court at 7 p.m.
