WILMINGTON, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom volleyball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Concordia College on Sat. afternoon at the Jones Center.
After losing set one 25-20, the Lightning (5-10, 2-5) won the next three sets to claim the victory over the first-year CACC member, Concordia. GBC battled for a 29-27 win in set two, cruised in set three 25-16, and then grinded out a 26-24 win in the fourth set.
The Lightning were led offensively by freshman Monica Dempsey who had four service aces to go with a triple-double that included a game-high 16 kills, 16 assists and 17 digs. Sophomore Roni Shaner also pitched in with eight kills, 21 assists to go with three service aces.
Concordia (0-11, 0-5), who came into the match having just won its first set of the year in a 3-1 loss to Post University, came out strong in the first set. The Clippers took an early 11-4 lead and extended that lead to eight at 15-7 before GBC started to get back into the match.
Down 17-10, the Lightning went on a 7-1 run to pull within 18-17 and force a Concordia timeout. After the timeout, the Clippers settled down and scored seven of the final nine points to win the first set, 25-20.
In the second set, the two teams traded points early on, with GBC starting to pull away after a 4-4 tie. The Lightning took an 11-4 lead and forced an early Concordia timeout, and later on led by as much as five, 19-14, but Concordia came back on a fierce run.
The Clippers used a 9-3 run to take a 23-22 lead, but a service error stopped the bleeding for the Lightning and tied the score at 23 apiece.
The score would tied four times, with both teams taking a one point lead only to miss the chance to close out the match. Trailing 27-26 and on the verge of falling down 2-0 in the match, Dempsey's kill off a pass from Shaner tied the score for the sixth and final time in the match, as senior Chalea Johnson served the Lightning to a 29-27 victory in light of a Concordia attack error and a kill by sophomore Charlott Minshall.
Riding the momentum of its second set win, the Lightning jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead on the service of senior Lauren Witzke and Dempsey, and then extended the lead to 12-6 after a Shaner ace which forced a Concordia timeout.
The Lightning never looked back as the Clippers never got within six during the third set. GBC won the third set by its largest lead of the game (nine), 25-16.
Concordia would not go away easily in the fourth set as the two teams traded points the entire way. Following a Clipper timeout with the score tied at 11, Concordia went on a 5-1 run to take a 16-12 lead and force a GBC timeout.
The Lightning twice pulled within one after the timeout, but trailing 16-15, they suffered a Clipper 5-0 run to fall behind 21-15.
This time, however, GBC responded with a 9-2 run to take a 24-23 lead. An Olivia Thompson kill for Concordia tied the score at 24, but the Lightning closed out the set, 26-24 on a Dempsey kill and a Concordia setting error to claim a 3-1 match victory.
