Boxscore

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom volleyball team, led by sophomore outside hitter Roni Shaner (eight kills, eight assists) and Monica Dempsey (10 assists) played competitively, but lost in straight sets (3-0) to intra-city rival and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Wilmington.

The Wildcats (3-9, 1-3 CACC) defeated the Lightning (4-10, 1-5) 25-21, 25-19 and 25-17 in front of approximately 200 people at the Joseph West Jones Center Thurs. night.

In the first set, the Lightning fell behind 3-0 early, but rallied back on the service of Dempsey and a kill by senior Kellyn Nolan to take a 5-4 lead. The two teams would trade points for nearly the whole game, with GBC unable to sustain any kind of run because of five service errors.

The Lightning held a 21-18 advantage late in the set, but a Wilmington 7-0 run that included a Paige Norvell ace, followed by five straight GBC attack errors led to a 25-21 Wildcat win.

The two teams again traded points early in the second set, with the two rivals fighting to an 8-8 tie before Wilmington started to pull away. Led by the service of Meghan Frick and Kaitlin Leonardi, the Wildcats took a 14-9 lead and forced GBC head coach Rich Bowers to take a timeout.

Following the timeout, the Lightning fought their way back into the game, getting within three at 18-15 after an assisted block by Nolan and Emily McMichael.

GBC would get within two points (21-19) after a Nolan kill off an assist by Shaner, but a Brittani Leathern kill started a 4-0 Wilmington run to win the set, 25-19.

A deflated Lightning squad took the court for what would be the third and final game. GBC fell behind 9-4 early and could never quite recover. Three service errors again hurt the Lightning as they tried to gain momentum throughout the set.

The Lightning twice got as close as two, but the Wildcats pulled away from their 14-12 lead with a 4-0 run and never looked back. Wilmington went on to win the set, 25-17.

GBC is back in action at home on Sat. as the Lightning host CACC foe Concordia College at 1 p.m.
