WILMINGTON, Del. – Freshman setter Monica Dempsey (four kills, seven assists) and sophomore outside hitter Roni Shaner (four kills, six assists) led the way offensively for Goldey-Beacom, but the Lightning fell in straight sets to the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 25-16, 25-19 and 25-16.
With the loss, GBC falls to 4-9 (1-4 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) as USP improves to 2-4, (2-1 CACC).
Fifth-year senior Christine Hudock surpassed the 1,000-dig mark for her career with a game-high 13 digs for the game. She came into the game needing three, and she reached that mark early in the match. Play stopped, and the crowd of approximately 150 gave Hudock a rousing ovation.
Sarah Hickman was an offensive force for the Devils with 35 of USP's 39 assists and four service aces. Kirsten Lechner led an otherwise very balanced Devils offense with 10 kills, as USP had four players with eight or more kills for the night.
In the first set, the Devils jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back. The Lightning never got within six points of USP as the Devils won, 25-16.
In the second set, USP grabbed a quick 4-0 lead on the strength of two service aces by Hickman, and though the Lightning fought hard to get back into the game, they trailed the rest of the way.
Down 16-10, the Lightning picked up a point on a USP service error and then junior A.J. Hicks scored two service points to bring GBC within three, 16-13.
The two teams traded points, but the Lightning could not get within three of the Devils, getting as close as 21-18. USP scored four of the last five points to win the set, 25-19.
Led again by the service of Wooden and Hickman, the Devils grabbed an early 11-5 lead and ran away with the third set and the match.
Down 14-6, Lightning head coach Rich Bowers called a timeout to try and re-focus his team, but it was no matter as GBC never pulled within eight of USP. The Devils won the set, 25-16.
The Lightning are back in action at home on Thurs. night as they take on intra-city rival, Wilmington University at 7 p.m.
