MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Freshman setter Monica Dempsey had a game-high 18 assists and fifth-year senior outside hitter Kellyn Nolan had a team-high six kills, but the Goldey-Beacom College (2-3) volleyball team fell 3-0 to host Millersville in nonconference action Thurs. night.

The Marauders (3-5), winners of three out of their last four, used a balanced attack that featured eight different players with a kill and six with a service ace.

The two teams traded points early on in the first set, but with the score tied at 4-4, Millersville's Katie Galuska tallied a service ace and the Marauders never looked back. They extended the lead to 17-12, and with Caitlin Forest serving, ran off the next eight straight points to seal a 25-12 first-set victory.

The second set was a similar story, as Dempsey set for kills by junior outside hitter Charlotte Minshall and Nolan and the Lightning benefited from Millersville attack and service errors to take a 7-6 lead in the early going.

But then a Corinne Marguess's kill set off a 9-0 Marauders run as Millersville took a commanding 15-7 lead. GBC never got back within six points as MU took the second set, 25-14.

Early in set three, the Lightning led by as many as four, and the set stood tied at 14-14, before Millersville climbed ahead and eventually won the set, 25-18. Nolan, sophomore outside hitter Amanda Mills (three kills), Roni Shaner (three kills, 11 digs, one service ace) and Chalea Johnson (four kills, one dig) all had kills in that third set, but it was not enough to extend the match.

The Lightning are back in action Fri., Sept. 11, as they will play four matches in the next two days as part of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Tournament. GBC will first take on Shepherd University today at 3 p.m., and then battle the host, IUP at 7 p.m.
