WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Despite a very competive first half that found Goldey-Beacom men's soccer team down just 1-0, the Lightning had no answer for Shepherd's attack in the second half and fell 4-1 in their season opener and first game of the West Chester Tournament on Saturday.
Senior midfielder Chris Steele scored GBC's lone goal off an assist from freshman defender Matt Bik. Steele, sophomore midfielder Kwame Appiah, and senior defender David Nimroozi each took three shots for the Lightning.
Junior goalkeeper Andrew Cairns played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves while allowing four goals.
Shepherd's Matt Martin scored off an assist from Zachary O'Neill near the 20-minute mark to open the scoring. Neither team would score for the rest of the half as Shepherd took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
A little over eight minutes into the second half, Josh Wise scored the first of his two goals off an assist from Valentine Monrose to put Shepherd up 2-0. Not two minutes later, Steele answered with a goal for GBC to bring the Lightning within one.
O'Neil would add an unassisted goal for Shepherd about six minutes after GBC's goal and then Wise scored his second goal of the day nearing the 75-minute mark for good measure.
The Lightning were outshot 19-16, but put 10 shots on goal to Shepherd's seven. GBC also took eight corner kicks to Shepherd's three.
