The Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team played the nation's 12th ranked team and the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Wilmington University to a scoreless first half tie, but could not overcome two quick Wildcat goals in the second half and were ousted from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 2-0 loss in the quarterfinals Mon. afternoon at Kirkwood Soccer Complex.
The Lightning, who earlier this season fell down 4-0 in the first 12 minutes of play to their intra-city rival and wound up losing 5-1, played mostly conservative in the first half, but had a few good chances to take a 1-0 halftime lead and just did not convert.
A smothering Wildcat defense allowed GBC to take just one shot in the first half while their offense took eight. Wilmington out-shot the Lightning 17-6 for the game and took nine corner kicks to GBC's one. Seniors Angel Rodriguez (a Second-Team All-CACC forward who came back after missing the last three games with an illness) and Chris Steele led the Lightning with two shots apiece.
Despite the Wildcats' distinct shot advantage in the first half, not many of their shots were on net, and so the game was scoreless at the intermission. Lightning freshman goalkeeper Ignacio Farias made just one save to preserve a first half shutout, and Wilmington's Duhan Malali did not need to make any.
Wilmington's First-Team All-CACC midfielder Nickalus McDonald opened the scoring for the day in the 52nd minute as he took a through pass from CACC Player of the Year, Sargbah Tarpeh inside the box and fired a shot past Farias to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Probyn Allen added an insurance goal for Wilmington a little over two minutes later when he sent what was supposed to be a pass into the box that curled over an out of position Farias and into the upper part of the net. First-Team All-CACC defender Dave Dease was credited with an assist.
GBC took five shots in the second half but only put one on goal as Malali earned a shutout win for the Wildcats with one save for the afternoon.
Farias made four saves and allowed two goals in a little over 78 minutes of work. Junior Andrew Cairns relieved him for a little under 12 minutes and made two saves.
The Lightning, who doubled their win total from last season and made the conference playoffs for the first time since 2003, finish the season with an overall record of 6-12 and a conference mark of 4-8.
