BOWIE, Md. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team earned its second straight shutout victory in as many days, as the Lightning dominated host Bowie State, 3-0 on Thurs. night in Division II non-league play.

GBC, which defeated BSU 3-0 at home back on Aug. 29, won the match 25-9, 25-17, 25-12 and improved to 7-13 on the season. BSU fell to 3-18.

Graduate senior Kellyn Nolan, after missing GBC's game last night, returned to the floor for the Lightning and came through with a season-high 16 kills. Her attack percentage for the night was an astounding, .714.

Freshman Monica Dempsey and sophomore Roni Shaner had six kills apiece, and 17 and 13 assists, respectively. Dempsey also had a game-high six service aces as the Lightning combined for 13 aces on the night.

Defensively, junior A.J. Hicks had a game-high 14 digs for the Lightning. She also pitched in with two service aces.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first set, GBC scored eight unanswered points led by Dempsey's service. The freshman setter had two service aces and an assist during that surge, and Nolan had two kills.

The Lightning never allowed BSU within six points as they won the first set with ease, 25-9. Fittingly, Dempsey scored the game-point on her fourth ace of the set. Nolan finished with five kills.

Senior Lauren Witzke got GBC off to a 3-0 start in the second set, helped by a kill from sophomore Amanda Mills (three kills, two assists for the match).

The Lightning pulled away steadily, led again by Nolan with five kills. Shaner recorded six assists and Dempsey had five, as the Lightning closed out the second set on a 7-2 run and won 25-17.

In the third set, GBC took control early with Nolan and senior Chalea Johnson each tallying two kills and Dempsey recording four assists to help the Lightning grab an 8-3 advantage.

Dempsey directed the offense with seven assists as Nolan was dominant again with six kills and two service aces. Nolan closed out the third set and the match with three serves, first recording two consecutive aces and then earning the final point on a BSU attack error.

GBC returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play this Sat. as the Lightning host Bloomfield College on Sat., Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. in the Jones Center.
