TAKOMA PARK, Md. – Senior Kate Attenberger's goal on a direct kick in the 71st minute of play sealed the Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team's first victory of the season as the Lightning went on to defeat Washington Adventist University (formerly Columbia Union), 3-2 on Sun. afternoon.

GBC improved to 1-9 with the win as WAU fell to 5-12. Attenberger led the Lightning offensively, assisting on the tying goal and scoring the eventual game-winner.

Sophomore Kristin Degenhardt and freshman Alyssa Vetrano split time in goal, with Vetrano getting the start. Vetrano made four saves and allowed one goal, and Degenhardt made two saves and also allowed one goal.

GBC's offensive pressure was relentless, as the Lightning took a season-high 39 shots to just 11 by WAU. They also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Danielle Panuccio opened the scoring for the day off an assist from Gina Urban to give WAU an early 1-0 lead almost 20 minutes into the game.

GBC freshman Kelly Williams answered with an unassisted goal in the 35th minute to knot the score at one goal apiece. That score would stand as the horn sounded for the intermission.

A little over five minutes into the half, the Lady Shock's Courtney Capers scored on a rebound after Degenhardt deflected a shot from Panuccio, and WAU was back ahead, 2-1.

But a little over eight minutes later, Attenberger sent a beautiful cross right in front of the net that found sophomore Karin Eriksson, who connected for the tying goal. The goal was Eriksson's team-leading seventh of the season.

GBC, which outshot the Lady Shock 18-3 in the second half, kept on the attack, and eventually Attenberger scored on a direct kick in the 71st minute to give GBC its first lead of the game, 3-2.

The Lightning would not relinquish that lead as they held on for a 3-2 non-league road victory.

GBC is back in action on Sat. at 1 p.m., as the Lightning host Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe, Post University.
