PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team snapped its five-game losing streak with a convincing, 3-0 performance over visiting Felician on Sat. afternoon at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The game marked GBC's final conference game of the season as the Lightning went out with a bang, 25-18, 25-20 and 25-20. The win improves GBC to 9-20 overall and 4-15 in league play as Felician falls to 4-25 and 3-15.
Graduate senior Kellyn Nolan and sophomore Roni Shaner led the way offensively for the Lightning with 10 and nine kills, respectively. Senior Chalea Johnson, a star in last year's 3-2 comeback win over Felician, came through again with seven kills and three blocks.
Graduate senior Christine Hudock led GBC defensively with 16 digs, and freshman Monica Dempsey had a well-rounded game with six kills, 18 assists, three service aces and six digs.
Felician was led offensively by Jenna Matesic with a game-high 15 kills and Amber Doran with 10 kills. Nicole Degenhardt directed traffic with 26 assists, and Kim Alo led the way defensively with 11 digs.
In the first set, the two teams traded points in the early going, but with the score knotted at 12, the Lightning went on a 6-0 run and never looked back. Nolan pitched in a kill and a service ace during that run to help GBC take an 18-12 lead. They would go on to win the set 25-18 and take a 1-0 match lead.
The Golden Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but the Lightning settled in, and a Dempsey kill started a 7-0 GBC run. Dempsey would also collect two aces and an assist in that run as the Lightning took a 7-3 advantage.
GBC started to pull away and led by as many as nine (22-13), when Felician made things interesting with a 4-0 run to close the gap to 22-17. A service error killed the Golden Falcons' momentum however, and the Lightning won the set 25-20 to take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
The conference rivals again traded points for much of the third set, but with the score tied at 16, the Lightning went on a 3-0 run highlighted by a junior Charlotte Minshall kill and two Golden Falcon attack errors.
Up 19-16, the Lightning battled to win six of the next 10 points and won the set, 25-20 to claim a 3-0 match victory.
The Lightning are back in action on Tues. night at non-league opponent West Chester University at 7 p.m.
