PIKE CREEK, Del. – A Karin Eriksson penalty kick goal brought the Goldey-Beacom College women's soccer team within a goal, but Alisha Smith's second goal of the day propelled visiting Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Nyack to a 3-1 victory on Sat. afternoon at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field.

The loss drops GBC to 0-9 (0-6 CACC) on the season as Nyack improved to 3-7 (2-5 CACC). Eriksson, a sophomore forward, now has six of the Lightning's seven goals this season.

Sophomore Kristin Degenhardt played the full 90 minutes in goal for GBC and made six saves while allowing three goals. The Warriors' Shannon McNeely also played the full 90 minutes and stopped seven shots while allowing one goal.

Both teams took nine shots in the first half, with Nyack scoring on two and GBC failing to score. The Lightning went on to out-shoot the Warriors, 13-5 in the second half but still did not make up any ground on the scoreboard.

Smith opened the scoring for the day almost 25 minutes into the action with a shot from 12 yards out off a pass from Susanna Bicknell to put Nyack up, 1-0.

A little over a minute later, Nyack's Amanda Carter sent a shot past Degenhart from 22 yards out to put the Warriors on top 2-0, which is how the score would remain the rest of the half.

Not five minutes into the second half, the Lightning applied some offensive pressure and were rewarded with a  penalty kick which Eriksson put in to bring GBC within a goal at 2-1.

But despite a relentless attack, the Lightning could not manage a second goal as Smith extended the Warrior lead to 3-1 just beyond the 78-minute mark. April Singer was credited with the assist.

The Lightning are back in action on tomorrow, Sun. Oct. 4 on the road at non-conference opponent Washington Adventist University. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
