PARSIPPANY, N.J. – Senior David Nimroozi's penalty-kick goal in the 73rd minute allowed the Goldey-Beacom College men's soccer team to defeat Caldwell College, 2-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference showdown Wed. afternoon at Smith Field.
The Lightning improved to 6-10 (4-6 CACC) with the win while the Cougars fall to 3-10-1 and 3-6 in the conference. With this win, GBC can now make the CACC playoffs for the first time since 2003 with a Caldwell loss tomorrow, Thurs. at Dominican College. The Lightning have won the most conference games and overall games this season since 2003.
With the game tied at one apiece, freshman Matt Bik dribbled into the Caldwell penalty area and was taken down by Caldwell goalkeeper Steve DeAngelis. Nimroozi took the ensuing penalty kick and beat DeAngelis to his right for a 2-1 Lightning lead. The goal was his fourth of the season.
The Cougars pressed for the equalizer, but GBC clung to the lead and held on for its second straight win and its first over Caldwell since the finals of the 2003 CACC Tournament.
The Lightning opened the scoring in the 34th minute when senior Chris Steele blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from 25 yards out for his second goal of the season.
Less than six minutes later, Rob Arena received a long pass down the right side from Donald Kafer, dribbled into the penalty area and scored from 15 yards out to tie the game, 1-1.
GBC outshot Caldwell 7-6 in the second half (14-13 for the game) and would get the gamewinner in the 73rd minute.
Freshman Ignacio Farias shut out the Cougars in the second half while making three stops. Junior Andrew Cairns started for the Lightning and made one save in the first half.
GBC wraps up the season on the road against CACC foe Concordia College on Fri. at 3 p.m.
