PHILADELPHIA – The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia completed the season sweep against the Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-18) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win Tues. night at the Bobby Morgan Arena.

GBC falls to 8-17 overall and 3-12 in league play as USP improved to 8-10 overall and 8-5 in the conference. The Devils moved a ½ game ahead of Holy Family in the CACC Southern Division standings and now stand in third place amidst the four-team playoff chase.

The Lightning were led by freshman Monica Dempsey's eighth double-double of the season. She had 12 assists and 11 digs to go with seven kills – all team highs.

Junior A.J. Hicks added 10 digs while senior Chalea Johnson had four blocks (three solo). The Lightning hit just -.010 as a team (18-19-98).

The Devils jumped out to an early lead, but the Lightning took advantage of several USP errors to hang around and keep things close. Fourteen of GBC's first 18 points were on USP errors, as the Lightning closed to within one point at 19-18.

USP would later open a two-point lead at 23-21 only to have GBC rally to tie the game at 23-all. A kill by Kirsten Lechner (eight kills, two service aces), followed by a Lightning attack error led to a 25-23 USP first-set win.

Cady Rich (17 kills) led the Devils with eight kills in 10 attacks without an error as USP opened up a 12-3 lead in the second set. The Devils went on to take that second set, 25-13.

In the third set, the Lightning held an early 8-5 lead and maintained its distance as they opened up a 13-10 lead before the Devils went on a 7-0 rally led by three Lechner kills and an ace from Leland.

USP would extend the lead to 24-17 when Dempsey tried to rally the Lightning with a kill to make the score 24-18. A Christine Puschak kill gave the Devils the decisive 25th point as they took the third set 25-18 and earned the 3-0 victory.

GBC returns to action on Thurs. night at 7 p.m. as they collide with intra-city rival Wilmington University at Pratt Gymnasium.
