PIKE CREEK, Del. – The Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team, led by four players with double-digit kills including two with triple-doubles, completed the season sweep of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Chestnut Hill College with a 3-1 victory on Dig Pink night at the Jones Center.
GBC (8-15, 3-10 CACC) won the match by scores of 25-16, 25-14, 29-31 and 25-13. CHC fell to 4-18 (0-12 CACC) with the loss.
Freshman Monica Dempsey (15 kills, 24 assists, 24 digs) and sophomore Roni Shaner (12 kills, 17 assists, 14 digs) each recorded triple-doubles to lead the Lightning.
Graduate senior Kellyn Nolan also pitched in with 13 kills and four blocks and senior Chalea Johnson had a season-high 10 kills. Graduate senior Christine Hudock had an incredible 31 digs from her libero position to lead GBC defensively.
The Lightning jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set on two Nolan kills and a Dempsey service ace and started gradually pulling away as they took a 12-6 advantage before the Griffins took a timeout.
CHC came out of the timeout and scored a point to bring the score to 12-7, but GBC would put the set out of reach with a 6-0 run on the service of Dempsey. Nolan and Shaner had two kills apiece during the run as the Lightning took an 18-7 lead.
Nolan finished off the set with her eighth kill as the Lightning won 25-16 to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Lightning came out on fire in the second set. With senior Lauren Witzke serving, the Lightning took a 4-0 lead. Dempsey had three consecutive kills to start things off and Nolan's kill was the fourth point.
CHC would settle down as Cassie Benson led the Griffins on a 5-0 surge to take an 8-6 lead. But back came the Lightning, as junior A.J. Hicks guided GBC back to an 11-8 lead.
Up 11-9, the Lightning took control of the match with a 7-0 run to go up 18-9. Shaner had two service aces and a kill during the run.
Johnson finished off the set with a kill as GBC took a 2-0 lead with a 25-14 second set win.
In the third set, the Lightning fell behind 5-2 early, but Hicks led them on a 7-0 run to take a 9-5 advantage.
GBC looked to be in control after that run, leading by as many as seven points (16-9), but Elisabeth DiGregorio led the Griffins on an 8-1 run to tie the match at 17.
The Lightning responded with three straight points, only to have CHC come right back with three points to tie the score again at 20.
GBC led 23-21 and even faced match point, up 24-22, but squandered the opportunity to win the match with two unforced errors as CHC tied the match at 24.
A see-saw match ensued, with both teams failing to nail down the point to win by two until finally the Griffins put the match away with a Bobbie Chukuntrarod service ace and a Lightning attack error to win 31-29.
CHC was determined to make its way back into the game as the Griffins traded points back and forth with GBC early in the first set. But with the score knotted at seven, the Lightning went on a 4-0 run and never looked back, scoring 18 of the last 24 points to win the set 25-13.
Junior Charlotte Minshall sealed the win with a kill off an assist from Dempsey as the Lightning won the fourth set and the match, 3-1.
GBC is now on a five-game, two-week road swing that starts with a visit to CACC foe Post in Waterbury, Conn. this Sun., Oct. 18.
