PIKE CREEK, Del. – The host Goldey-Beacom College volleyball team had its two-game win streak snapped as the Lightning fell to Bloomfield College, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play Sat. afternoon at the Jones Center.
GBC (7-14, 2-9 CACC) was led offensively by fifth-year senior Kellyn Nolan (nine kills) and senior Chalea Johnson (five kills). Freshman Monica Dempsey directed traffic with 11 assists. She now has 300 in just her rookie season.
The two teams traded points nearly the entire way in the first set. The Lightning took a 10-8 lead on a service run by junior A.J. Hicks at about the mid-point of the set, but Bloomfield regained the lead on a 3-0 run and the see-saw that was the first set continued.
Up 21-19, the Lady Deacons sealed the deal with a 4-0 run and took the first set 25-19. Three attack errors during that run did the Lightning in as they fell behind in the match, 1-0.
GBC got off to a running start in the second set, jumping out to a quick 7-3 lead with the help of a kill apiece from Dempsey, sophomore Amanda Mills and Nolan, and Johnson.
Then, when Bloomfield answered and tied the score at seven, the Lightning took advantage of three Lady Deacon attack errors to go back ahead 10-7.
Again, GBC could not hold onto that lead as Bloomfield, down 11-10, went on a 9-1 run to climb ahead 19-12 and take control of the set.
Dempsey pulled the Lightning within three at 19-16 with three straight service points following a senior Lauren Witzke kill, but the Lady Deacons scored six of the final nine points and won the second set by the same score as the first, 25-19.
In the third set, GBC struggled early and quickly fell behind 6-1. Head coach Rich Bowers called a timeout and settled his team down as the Lightning fought their way back into the set.
Bowers' squad showed a lot of fight, twice pulling within two, but never got any closer than that as Bloomfield steadily pulled away and won the set, 25-20 to clinch the match.
GBC is back in action on Tues. night, 7 p.m. as the Lightning visit Holy Family in CACC action.
