Men’s Soccer Unveils 2022 Schedule

8/3/2022 12:00:00 AM

(2022 schedule)

Goldey-Beacom Men's Soccer team is back on the pitch and looks for a return to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament as the team announced its 2022 slate.

With the NCAA holding a Fall Festival this year, the season begins a week earlier and GBC will have home games that first weekend.  The squad on August 26 hosts Mercyhurst and two days later faces Gannon, one of five opponents who played in last year's NCAA Tournament.  The games will provide formidable tests with Mercyhurst going to last year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference semifinals and Gannon losing in the conference final before getting an at-large postseason berth.

The PSAC run continues against Bloomsburg, West Chester and Lock Haven with the latter competing in last year's NCAA Tournament.  Conference play opens September 10 at home against Bloomfield.

Other games of note include hosting defending CACC champion Post on September 17, visiting 2021 NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist and PSAC champion Millersville on September 27, CACC runner-up Dominican (NY) in the home finale October 15 and a trip to Wilmington (DE) on October 26 in the regular-season finale.

In between, Goldey-Beacom will host a rebranded Homecoming and Lightning Family Weekend October 7-9.  The weekend's events include opportunities for alums to come back on campus to reunite with many friends and also see the many changes that many who continue to be part of the family help ignite.  It also will give an opportunity for parents to come on campus and spend time with their kids as part of an atmosphere filled with festivities and fun.

Both soccer teams on October 8 host Nyack.

The top eight teams compete in the CACC Tournament with the quarterfinals on November 1 and championship weekend taking place on the campus of Holy Family University in Philadelphia from November 4-6.

A very young lineup once again looks for a boost from sophomore Patrick Short (Georgetown, DE), who last year exploded as an immediate member of the starting lineup that made him a key cog at forward.  Leading the returnees with 14 starts from last year, he ended 36th in the CACC with nine points and also tied for the team lead with four goals.

Sophomore Nick Perez (Wilmington, DE) played a massive role a season ago, continuing the lineage of solid midfielders for the Lightning.  He made 12 starts last year and seeks to once again helping make everyone around him better.

Sophomore Tumi Sekhampu (Midrand, South Africa) made the most of his 11 starts at midfield last season, giving a boost to a lineup that showed great progress with each game.  He ended the campaign 28th in the CACC with three assists, 36th with nine points and 39th with three goals.

After Goldey-Beacom did not have a season in 2020, many of the young players now have a year of play under their belt and look for a rejuvenated campaign in 2022.  Most of the Lightning's starters for a lion's share of last year's games had never competed in a match for the program before the season.

Please note beginning this season, there no longer is overtime during the regular season in college soccer.  If a game is level after 90 minutes, it ends in a tie.
