Freshman Hunter McGee (Carp, ON) continued his torrid start to 2021 by shooting a career-best 67 in the final round, capturing the Mike Bello Invitational in Baldwinsville, NY for his second victory of the season.

After opening the 36-hole, one-day event by shooting even-par 72, McGee ended it with a blistering round that put his 18-hole performance and third career victory among the elite in program history.

His five-under-par round ties him for the best round to par in school history, accomplished by Goldey-Beacom Athletics Hall-of-Famer Mike Tobiason during the GBC Invitational in 2002-03 and CoSIDA Academic All-America Pat McRae on October 22, 2012 at the GBC Fall Classic.

McGee's 67 is one shy of the school mark set by McRae in the aforementioned 2012 event.  His 139 equals McRae's record from April 15-16, 2012 at the GBC Spring Invitational and his five-under-par for 36 holes matches Tobiason's mark from the 2005 Dowling Fall Shootout.

His third career win ties him for third place in program history, one behind McRae's four triumphs.  Tobiason holds the record with 23.

Not to be outdone is the continuous strong play of the entire Lightning squad, competing with just four players.  Freshman Pablo Saenz Avila (Bogota, Colombia), like McGee an All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference pick from last season, shot 77 in the final round to end tied for 24th with 155.

Camilo Samur (Bucaramanga, Colombia) also carded a final-round 77 to close tied for 29th at 157.  Fellow freshman Mason Kucy (Camrose, AB) shot 81 in the opening round and finished 39th with 165.

Goldey-Beacom ended tied for sixth with 616, which included a final-round 305.  Saint Thomas Aquinas won with 595.

This comes after the news Goldey-Beacom sits fifth in the latest NCAA East Region rankings.  This is the primary criteria for determining participants in the NCAA Tournament.

It was Goldey-Beacom's final tournament before it takes part in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship.  The 18-hole event takes place next Monday at White Beeches Golf & Country Club in Haworth, NJ.
