After one year, Goldey-Beacom finally has an Athletics team back in the spotlight.

Goldey-Beacom's men's golf squad made its way to Jackson Springs, NC and opened its 2021 campaign in the first round of the Browngolf Intercollegiate.

March 12, 2021 marks exactly one year since Goldey-Beacom's women's tennis team upended Delaware State, 5-2, in what turned out to be the College's final athletics event of the academic calendar.  After a year of meetings, adjustments, Zoom calls, perseverance, determination, tears and endless wondering among other things, a team sporting the Lightning logo finally is back in competition.

Freshman Hunter McGee (Carp, ON), last year picked first team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, shot 38 on the back nine as part of his total of 80 and sits tied for 40th.  He eagled the par-5 14th hole, recorded birdie on the par-5 ninth hole and notched seven pars.

Pablo Saenz Avila (Bogota, Colombia), also a 2019-20 All-CACC selection in his debut season, shot 81 and is tied for 44th.  He joined McGee in getting eagle on the 14th and also birdied the par-4 16th hole as part of shooting 39 on the last nine.

Freshman Camilo Samur (Bucaramanga, Colombia) in his first collegiate tournament fired 86, including birdie on the 14th, and is tied for 64th.  He carded 41 on the back nine.  Freshman Mason Kucy (Camrose, AB) ended things for the Lightning with 98.

Goldey-Beacom as a team shot 345.

The Lightning enter the 2021 campaign after closing last season sixth in the East Region, according to Golfstat, and were in a good spot to possibly make an at-large appearance at the NCAA Regional.  Goldey-Beacom won the Jefferson Invitational by 32 shots, captured the Griffin Invitational by 35 shots and closed in the top five during six of its seven tournaments.

GBC also was the winner of the Mark Laesch Award from the Golf Coaches Association of America.  The award is given to an NCAA team in each division, along with the NAIA and junior college, which has the biggest improvement in adjusted stroke average per round from the 2018-19 to the 2019-20 seasons.  Goldey-Beacom led all of Division II with a 20.68 average.

Final-round action is Saturday, also at Foxfire Resort & Golf.
