Goldey-Beacom put forth a more than valiant effort with a young roster full of promise and that group ended in second place at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship in Haworth, NJ.

The Lightning entered the final round as the clubhouse leader, shooting 298 on Monday that was four shots off the school record at this tournament set in 2008-09.  But it was Wilmington (DE) that forged ahead Tuesday with 292 to edge GBC, which closed the championship with 606, by six shots.

Freshman Pablo Saenz Avila (Bogota, Colombia) put forth a remarkable tournament, ending tied for third with 150.  He shot an opening-round 70 that more than paved the way to his all-tournament performance after entering the week ranked 15th in the East Region, according to GolfStat.

Freshman Gonzalo Moreno (Seville, Spain), twice named the league's Player and Rookie of the Week, also ended tied for third at 150.  The East Region's No. 4 ranked player shot one-under par on the back nine Tuesday that included three birdies to end with 76.

Freshman Hunter McGee (Carp, ON) also exceled in his first conference championship, ending tied for eighth with 154.  Tuesday's round featured three birdies on the front side as he went out in 36 and closed the round with 78.

Junior Corbin Babyak (Wallenpaupack, PA) and senior Braden Wheeler (Carleton Place, ON) each carded 77 on Tuesday and each ended the championship tied for 11th at 155.  Babyak made four birdies on the day, ending with a tournament-high eight.

The Lightning easily closed with a tournament-best 30 birdies, compared to 21 by Wilmington (DE), and had the best averages on both par-four holes at 4.27 and par-five holes at 4.93.

Goldey-Beacom has plenty to look forward to and still can place the team or individual golfers at the NCAA Regional in May.  GBC this fall won the Jefferson Classic on September 30 and three weeks earlier took fifth against some of the region's best at the FPU Fall Invitational.

GBC next Monday and Tuesday competes at the Eagle Invitational in Watertown. CT.
