Goldey-Beacom grabbed the lion's share of the first-round attention by seeing all of five of its golfers excel, helping the team own the clubhouse lead at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship in Haworth, NJ.

Pablo Saenz Avila (Bogota, Colombia) showed no sign of freshman jitters, ending the day in first place by two shots.  He fired a 70 that was one off the school record at this tournament set by Justin Grossman in 2008-09.  Saenz Avila made three birdies over the first six holes and then recorded two birdies on the back nine to close two-under par.

Freshman Gonzalo Moreno (Seville, Spain) has been nothing but spectacular in the early going and today was no exception.  Twice named CACC Player and Rookie of the Week, Moreno carded all pars on the front nine and then notched two birdies on the back to close with a two-over-par 74.  He sits tied for third place.

Freshman Hunter McGee (Carp, ON) also impressed with 76, which included a birdie on the par-three 13th, to place him tied for seventh.  Senior Braden Wheeler (Carleton Place, ON) and junior Corbin Babyak (Wallenpaupack, ON) also were keys to the Lightning's success, each carding 78 to put them tied for 13th.

GBC ended the day with 298, four shots off the school record at this tournament set in 2008-09, and leads Wilmington (DE) by 10 shots.  The Lightning shot two-under par on the par fives to pace the way and easily owns the lead with 15 birdies.  Four teams are next with seven birdies.

Goldey-Beacom is aiming for some history as it looks for a fourth CACC title.  It won the crown in 2003, 2004 and 2005 with the following year's squad capturing the NCAA Regional.  That 2005-06 unit was just inducted into Goldey-Beacom Athletics Hall of Fame and this academic year will be enshrined into the CACC Hall of Fame.

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday will be in the final pairings along with Wilmington (DE) and Post at White Beeches Golf & Country Club.  The round begins at 8:00 am and the Lightning start at 9:40 am.
