Game 2 HTMLWILMINGTON, Del. - Senior utility player
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) recorded a pair of hits and posted the fourth shutout of her college career to lead Goldey-Beacom College (5-17, 4-11) to a sweep of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader over Concordia College (2-13, 1-9) at the Lightning's Jackson Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
After winning the first game by a 4-3 margin, the Lightning used a dominating performance by Peters to earn their second shutout of the season with a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.
Peters, who posted the fourth shutout of her college career, allowed two hits as she pitched her first complete game of the season. She struck out a season-high six batters while allowing three walks. After allowing a single hit in the first and third innings, Peters did not allow another hit en route to earning her first victory of the season.
In addition to her success in the pitching circle, Peters also accounted for two of the Lightning's 14 hits in the doubleheader. After recording a single with a run scored in the first game, she tallied her team-high third triple of the season in the fourth inning of the nightcap.
The Lightning sprinted out to a 4-0 lead in the first game by scoring four runs on four hits while taking advantage of a pair of Concordia errors. Sophomore catcher
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.) drove in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line for a 2-0 advantage. She scored two batters later when freshman
Paulynn Mao (Rancho Alamitos H.S./Anaheim, Calif.) singled up the middle.
A fielding error by the Clippers allowed freshman outfielder
Charlee King (Hodgson Vo-Tech H.S./New Castle, Del.) to score, upping the Lightning's lead to 4-0.
But, the Clippers answered in the top of the third inning when sophomore
Kayla Luken (Westview H.S./Beaverton, Ore.) drove in a run with a two-out single to center field.
In the top of the fifth inning, Concordia trimmed the deficit to 4-3 when Luken hit a two-run double to left field. However, the Lightning held the Clippers to just one hit over the final 2.1 innings to secure the victory.
In the nightcap, the Lightning took an early lead for the second straight game by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. King hit a single to left field to give Goldey-Beacom a 1-0 edge before Mao doubled to center field to allow Schoff to score and increase the lead.
Mao upped the advantage to 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning when she singled down the left field line to score a pair of runs before the Lightning added two more insurance runs in the next inning on a Peters triple and a Schoff single.
While Peters led the Lightning to the doubleheader sweep, Mao collected three hits and drove in three runs while Schoff added three hits with three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in.
Luken posted a pair of hits and drove in three runs to lead Concordia, which has lost 12 of its last 13 games.
The Lightning, who finished with a 3-1 record in their brief four-game homestand, will travel to No. 14 Caldwell on Sunday, Apr. 6 for an 11 a.m. CACC game that was rescheduled from last Saturday. It will be the first of 13 consecutive road games for Goldey-Beacom, which will not return home until Saturday, Apr. 19.
