Lightning Finish in Fifth Place as Millersville Comes Back to Win Tournament

NEWARK, Del. - Led by senior Matthew Japchen (Central Bucks West H.S./Doylestown, Pa.), the Goldey-Beacom College men's golf team finished in fifth place after shooting a 329 in the final round of the 2014 Goldey-Beacom College Spring Invitational at Deerfield Golf and Tennis Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Millersville University overcame a two-stroke deficit by carding a 298 in the final round to earn first place over West Chester University by just one stroke. In addition, senior Jonathon Heile (Cumberland Valley H.S./Mechanicsburg, Pa.) shot an even-par round of 70 to earn medalist honors after finishing the tournament with a two-round total of 151 (+11).

Japchen, who posted an 89 in the first round on Monday, improved in the second round by 13 strokes to finish in 19th place with a two-round total of 165 while fellow senior Justin Lesko (St. Mark's H.S./Newark, Del.) followed in 23rd place after shooting a 172 in the tournament.

Freshmen Garrett Brown (Glen Burnie H.S./Severn, Md.) and Tom Hannig (Concord H.S./Claymont, Del.) each ended the tournament in a tie for 26th place. While Hannig posted an 87 in the second round, Brown tallied an 89 on the second day of the tournament.

Junior Matthew Scheeper (Delsea H.S./Franklinville, N.J.) earned a share of 29th place after finishing the tournament with a two-round score of 180.

Competing as an individual, junior Tyler McElwee (St. Mark's H.S./Wilmington, Del.) also finished in a tie for 29th place for the Lightning, who will play at the St. Thomas Aquinas Spring Invitational.
