WILMINGTON, Del. – Led by sophomore utility player
Kasia Smith (Estrella Foothills H.S./Waddell, Ariz.), Philadelphia University (12-1, 4-0) earned its second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep in as many days by winning a pair of CACC games over Goldey-Beacom College (1-12, 0-6) at the Jackson Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon.
The Rams, who opened their CACC slate on Sunday with two victories over Felician, earned the first win by a 9-1 margin before posting an 8-3 triumph in eight innings in the nightcap.
In the first game, Philadelphia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After sophomore
Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg H.S./Schaumburg, Ill.) gave the Rams a 1-0 lead with an RBI infield single, freshman outfielder
Shannon Weaver (Wilson H.S./Sinking Spring, Pa.) upped the advantage to 2-0 when she scored on a wild pitch.
Kakareka scored on a sacrifice fly by junior utility player
Stephanie Martin (Seton Keough H.S./Hanover, Md.) for the Rams' third run of the inning.
The Rams added a run in the top of the third inning when junior pitcher
Samantha Abromavage (Jefferson Township H.S./Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) drove in a run with a single to left field.
But, the Lightning trimmed the margin to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore catcher
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.) drove in a run with an RBI ground out to shortstop.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Rams added three more runs to increase the advantage to 7-1. Senior infielder
Meaghan Lewis (Chenango Valley H.S./Binghamton, N.Y.) drove in two runs when she hit a double to right center field before Smith added an RBI single to left center field with two outs.
Philadelphia added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning when freshman infielder
Gabrielle Brown (Governor Mifflin H.S./Shillington, Pa.) and Smith each drove in a run.
A two-out bloop single by senior outfielder
Samantha Riabko (Haddon Township H.S./Haddon Township, N.J.) drove in two runs to give Philadelphia an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. However, the Lightning closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when senior outfielder
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) hit an RBI single to center field.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Lightning scored twice to take a 3-2 lead. Senior infielder
Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch before freshman outfielder
Charlee King (Hodgson Vo-Tech H.S./New Castle, Del.) added an RBI single up the middle with two outs.
But, the Rams answered in the top of the fourth inning when Kakareka tied the game with an RBI groundout to first base.
The score remained tied until the top of the eighth inning when the Rams scored five runs on four hits to take an 8-3 lead they did not relinquish. After junior infielder
Nicole Troisi (Pope John Paul II H.S./Norristown, Pa.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field, junior outfielder
Emma Haley (Jensen Beach H.S./Jensen Beach, Fla.) upped the lead to 5-3 with an RBI groundout to second base.
Kakareka added a run-scoring single to center field before Martin drove in two more runs with a double to deep right field.
Kakareka retired the Lightning in order in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the victory.
Smith led the Rams to the doubleheader sweep by posting five hits, including four in the first game, while driving in a pair of runs. Meanwhile, Martin collected three runs batted in while adding a four-for-eight effort at the plate.
Zaccaria, who has hit safely in five consecutive games, led the Lightning with five hits and three runs scored.
The Lightning, who have played just six games at home this season due to weather, will begin an eight-game road trip on Thursday, Mar. 27 when they visit Holy Family University for a pair of CACC games starting at 3 p.m.
