Men's Golf Opens Spring at St. James Plantation Invitational

Japchen Leads Lightning to 16th Place Team Finish

Justin Lesko and the Lightning finished in 16th place in their first event of the Spring season.

SOUTHPORT, N.C. - Led by senior Matthew Japchen (Central Bucks West H.S./Doylestown, Pa.), the Goldey-Beacom College men's golf team opened the Spring portion of its 2013-14 schedule by participating in the St. James Plantation Invitational hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania last weekend.

The Lightning finished in 16th place with a three-round total of 1035 while Adelphi took the team championship by firing a team total of 900 over the three-round event.

Japchen earned 60th place in the tournament after recording a three-round total of 248, including a seven-over-par score of 79 in the final round.

Meanwhile, freshman Garrett Brown (Glen Burnie H.S./Severn, Md.) followed in a tie for 65th place after posting a three-round score of 251 while senior Justin Lesko (St. Mark's H.S./Newark, Del.) turned in a 265 to earn 92nd place.

Freshman Tom Hannig (Concord H.S./Claymont, Del.) earned a share of 99th place after shooting a three-round score of 276 while junior Matthew Scheeper (Delsea H.S./Franklinville, N.J.) rounded out the team effort with a score of 280, good for 101st place.

Competing as an individual, junior Tyler McElwee (St. Mark's H.S./Wilmington, Del.) posted a score of 282 for the tournament and finished in 102nd place.

The Lightning will be idle until Mar. 31 when they host the Goldey-Beacom Spring Invitational at Deerfield Golf and Tennis Club.
