PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Hoping to end its season-opening weekend on a positive note, the Goldey-Beacom College softball team suffered a pair of losses to finish its competition at the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish Showdown at the Lake Catherine Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Lightning, who dropped to 0-5 on the season, lost their first game by a 10-2 margin against Lynn in five innings before a 13-0 loss against the host Sailfish in the nightcap.
After Lynn surged out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning of the first game, the Lightning trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the third inning with a pair of RBI singles by senior
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) and sophomore
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.).
But, the Fighting Knights exploded for six runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning to take a commanding 10-2 lead. From there, the Lightning were held to just two hits in the next two innings as Lynn secured the five-inning win.
In the second game, the Sailfish took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of run-scoring singles by sophomore infielder
Theresa Butler (George Jenkins H.S./Mulberry, Fla.) and senior
Camille Benito (Westminster Christian H.S./Miami, Fla.).
Palm Beach Atlantic upped its lead to 8-0 in the second inning by scoring six more runs on three hits, including a three-run triple by sophomore outfielder
Lindsey Johnson (Appling Christian Academy/Hazlehurst, Ga.).
The Sailfish added three more runs in the third inning and a single run in the fifth inning to extend their advantage to 13-0.
Led by sophomore
Aubree Murphy (Jupiter, Fla.), the Sailfish limited the Lightning to just three singles en route to the victory.
The Lightning had eight different players record a hit in the doubleheader while Peters and senior
