TOWNSEND, Del. – Led by a third place finish from freshman
Garrett Brown (Glen Burnie H.S./Severn, Md.), the Goldey-Beacom College men's golf team earned fifth place at the 2013 Goldey-Beacom College Fall Invitational at Odessa National Golf Course on Monday afternoon.
The Lightning, who were tied for third place after the opening round, fired a 310 team score in the final round to finish with a two-round total of 623. Meanwhile, St. Thomas Aquinas held on to its large first round lead to claim the team title with a two-round score of 597.
In addition, senior
Sam Deitte (St. Peters Lutheran H.S./St. Louis, Mo.) claimed the medalist honor after winning a tiebreaker against freshman
Brendan Hunter (Groton-Dunstable H.S./Groton, Mass.) of St. Thomas Aquinas. Deitte won the medalist title after shooting a 34 on the final nine holes while Hunter carded a 37.
Brown, who posted a 73 in the opening round on Sunday, fired a 74 in the second round to earn third place.
Meanwhile, senior
Matthew Japchen (Central Bucks West H.S./Doylestown, Pa.) finished in a share of 14th place after posting a 78 in the second round. Junior
Matthew Scheeper (Delsea H.S./Franklinville, N.J.) earned a tie of 20th place with a two-round score of 156, including a 77 in the second round.
Freshman
Tom Hannig (Concord H.S./Claymont, Del.) posted an 84 in the second round to finish in 40th place while senior
Justin Lesko (St. Mark's H.S./Newark, Del.) was tied for 41st place after shooting an 81 during the second round.
Competing as an individual, freshman
Tyler McElwee (St. Mark's H.S./Wilmington, Del.) finished in a tie for 47th place after carding an 84.
The Lightning will be idle until Tuesday, Oct. 8 when they compete at the Philadelphia University Invitational.
