WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior forward
Luiz Ristow (Joinville, Brazil) scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute as Goldey-Beacom College (1-6-0) scored two goals in the final six minutes to earn its first win of the season, a 4-3 non-conference victory over the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (2-5-0) at the Lightning's Nancy-Churchman Sawin Field on Thursday afternoon.
The Lightning, who had scored just three goals in their first six matches, tallied three of their four goals in the second half to earn their first win since a 2-1 victory over Washington College on Oct. 17, 2012.
Trailing by 3-2 with 6:06 remaining in regulation, the Lightning tied the game as sophomore
Ernest Ackah (Smyrna H.S./Smyrna, Del.) knocked in a rebound of his own shot in front of the goal after a corner kick by graduate student forward
Kyle Lawrence.
Then, Ristow provided the Lightning with the game-winning marker when he dribbled from the near sideline and fired a shot from 18 yards that got past sophomore goalkeeper
Tim Ofman (United H.S./New Florence, Pa.). It was Ristow's first goal of the season.
From there, the Lightning defense held Pitt-Johnstown without a shot to earn the victory.
With 3:55 remaining in the first half, the Lightning took a 1-0 lead when senior midfielder
Andre Jank (Campo Grande, Brazil) headed in a free kick from senior midfielder
William Miller (Meadowcreek H.S./Norcross, Ga.). It was Jank's third goal of the season and snapped the Lightning's scoreless drought of 331 minutes, 5 seconds.
The Lightning held onto the one-goal advantage until the 69th minute when a crossing pass from sophomore midfielder
Matthew Kinney was found by sophomore forward
Colin Michalski (Baldwin H.S./Pittsburgh, Pa.), who scored his third goal of the year on a quick shot.
Just over five minutes later, the Lightning regained the advantage when Jank converted a penalty kick after he was fouled inside the penalty area. But, the Mountain Cats answered in the 81st minute when freshman
Colin Harrison (Williams Valley H.S./Tower City, Pa.) scored the first goal of his college career off an assist from senior midfielder
Steve Taslov (Montour H.S./Coraopolis, Pa.).
The Mountain Cats took their first lead of the match in the 83rd minute when Michalski tallied his second goal of the match on a long shot from 25 yards that beat senior goalkeeper
Carlos Meinhard (Caracas, Venezuela).
Jank led the Lightning with his two-goal performance while Meinhard made seven saves as Goldey-Beacom was outshot by an 18-17 margin.
Michalski tallied two goals for the Mountain Cats while Ofman had five saves.
The Lightning, who are in the middle of a three-match homestand, will host Nyack College on Saturday, Sept. 28 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the Mountain Cats will travel to Daemen College on Sunday, Sept. 29.
