DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Senior outfielder
Courtney Butler (Islip H.S./Islip, N.Y.) had four hits and drove in two runs as Mercy College (15-13) earned a sweep of its non-conference doubleheader over Goldey-Beacom College (9-19) at the Mavericks' Smith Field on Monday afternoon.
After taking the first game by a 7-2 margin, the Mavericks completed the sweep with a 6-0 shutout victory in the nightcap.
The Mavericks took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning in the first game. After freshman
Amanda Gardiner (Sterling H.S./Sterling, N.Y.) gave Mercy a 1-0 lead with an RBI groundout, the Mavericks scored their second run of the inning on a fielding error by the Lightning.
An RBI single by sophomore infielder
Chrissie Cleary (St. Anthony's H.S./Smithtown, N.Y.) upped the Mavericks' advantage to 3-0 before Butler drove in a run with a bunt single.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Mavericks extended their lead to 6-0 with a pair of run-scoring singles from Cleary and freshman
Taylor Concklin (Valley Central H.S./Montgomery, N.Y.).

Kelly Bentson (Brewster H.S./Brewster, N.Y.) increased the margin to 7-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lightning trimmed the deficit to 7-1 as junior
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) scored on a single by sophomore
Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.).
Alonzo also drove in a run in the top of the seventh inning with a double to left center field, but the Lightning were unable to get any closer.
In the second inning, the Mavericks took a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. After Cleary drove in a run with a double to left center field, she upped the advantage to two runs when she scored on a bunt single by Butler.
Bentson scored on an error by the Lightning in the bottom of the third inning to extend the margin to 3-0 before another error scored Gardiner with one out.
Leading by 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, senior
Kimberly Crnkovich (La Selva Beach, Calif.) led off the inning with a solo home run to left center field. It was her team-leading second home run of the season.
The Mavericks added an insurance run in the fifth inning on a single by Butler.
While Butler led the Mavericks to the wins, Cleary posted five hits, including three hits in the first game, while driving in three runs with three runs scored. Meanwhile, Concklin contributed three hits.
Alonzo had two hits in the first game with two runs batted in for the Lightning while Peters and junior outfielder
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) had a hit in each game and also scored a run in the first game.
The Lightning, who have lost nine straight games, will return to their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on Wednesday, Apr. 10 when they host Georgian Court in a doubleheader at the Jackson Athletic Complex starting at 2:30 p.m.
