ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Freshman outfielder
Shannon Haukap (Meadowdale H.S./Edmonds, Wash.) had five hits, including three home runs, and scored four runs as Dominican College (14-12, 10-0) extended its win streak to six straight games by sweeping a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader over Goldey-Beacom College (9-17, 5-9) at the Dominican College Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.
After posting a 9-1 victory in a five-inning game to open the doubleheader, the Chargers completed the sweep by erupting for a season-high 12 runs en route to a 12-4 triumph in the nightcap.
In the first game, Haukap gave Dominican a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double before senior
Julie Plante (Joseph Case H.S./Swansea, Mass.) added a sacrifice fly to right field to score Haukap.
The Lightning cut the margin to 2-1 in the top of the third inning when sophomore utility player
Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) hit an RBI single with one out in the inning.
A pair of home runs in the bottom of the third inning upped the Chargers' advantage to 7-1. After Dominican opened the inning with a single by senior
Delaney Childers (Johnstown-Monroe H.S./Johnstown, Ohio) and a walk by freshman
Kimberly Ragazzo (Lawrenceville H.S./Lawrenceville, N.J.), senior catcher
Ashley Corrao (Tottenville H.S./Staten Island, N.Y.) blasted a three-run home run to increase the margin to 5-1.
After junior
Paige Berzak (Pacifica H.S./Cypress, Calif.) singled, junior
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) recorded a strikeout. But, Haukap hit her second home run of the season with a two-run blast on the ensuing at-bat to give Dominican a six-run lead.
The Chargers added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on RBI singles by Corrao and senior
Kathryn Coles (Prince Edward H.S./Farmville, Va.) to extend the lead to 9-1 before freshman
Elizabeth Hogan (Leigh H.S./San Jose, Calif.) held the Lightning to a single in the top of the fifth inning to secure the eight-run victory.
Sophomore
Asia Ellis (Lenape H.S./Marlton, N.J.) gave Goldey-Beacom a 1-0 lead in the second game when she hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the top of the second inning. It was the first home run hit by a Lightning player this season.
But, the Chargers answered in the bottom of the inning when Haukap hit her third home run of the season, a three-run shot off senior
Ashley Antosh (Twin Valley H.S./Honey Brook, Pa.) to give the Chargers a two-run edge.
Hogan upped the Dominican advantage to 4-1 in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI single before the Chargers added four more runs in the fourth inning for a commanding 8-1 lead. After Ragazzo hit an RBI single with two outs, Corrao doubled home two runs for a 7-1 advantage. Berzak added an RBI single to increase the margin to 8-1 before Antosh retired Hogan to end the inning.
The Lightning scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to trim the margin to 8-4. After Antosh drove in a run with a double, she scored on an RBI double by freshman
Taylor Ewing (North Dorchester H.S./Hurlock, Md.) to close the gap to 8-3.
Peters added an RBI single with one out in the inning to narrow the deficit to four runs.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Chargers secured the victory by scoring four runs on a three-run home run by Haukap and an RBI single by Corrao.
Haukap led the Chargers to the doubleheader sweep by going 5-for-7 with nine runs batted in. Meanwhile, Corrao added four hits with seven runs batted in and three runs scored.
Alonzo led the Lightning with three hits in the doubleheader.
The Lightning, who have lost seven games in a row, will travel to Mercy College on Monday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader against the Mavericks at 2 p.m.
