Game 2
WILMINGTON, Del. – Freshman
Julie Heaton (Eastern Regional H.S./Berlin, N.J.) posted five hits and scored three runs as Chestnut Hill College (11-23, 8-16) used a 28-hit attack to sweep a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom College (10-30, 6-18) at the Lightning's Jackson Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.
After rallying from a four-run deficit in the first game to earn an 8-7 victory, the Griffins completed the sweep by banging out a season-high 16 hits in an 8-1 triumph over the Lightning. The wins allowed Chestnut Hill to snap an eight-game road losing streak.
In the first game, the Griffins took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning when freshman
Allie Williams (Fauquier H.S./Warrenton, Va.) hit a two-run single up the middle.
But, the Lightning answered with three runs in the bottom of the opening inning to claim a one-run lead on a three-run triple by freshman
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.) with two outs.
Sophomore
Asia Ellis (Lenape H.S./Marlton, N.J.) extended the Lightning's advantage to 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI single to center field before Schoff drove in two more runs with a single to left field.
In the top of the fourth inning, a throwing error by junior third baseman
Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) allowed two runs to score for the Griffins, narrowing the margin to 6-4 with two outs.
The Griffins scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to regain a two-run lead. Heaton opened the inning with a solo home run to left center field. It was her second home run of the season.
An RBI single to center field by freshman
Elisabeth Raub (Palmerton Area H.S./Palmerton, Pa.) with one out tied the game at 6-6 before another Lightning error brought home the go-ahead run by freshman
Francesca Faillace (Little Flower Catholic H.S. for Girls/Philadelphia, Pa.).
Junior outfielder
Sarah Mattaliano (Coral Springs Charter School/Coral Springs, Fla.) increased the lead to 8-6 with a single to center field that allowed Raub to score.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lightning narrowed the deficit to 8-7. After sophomore
Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) led off the inning with a triple to center field, she scored on an RBI single by sophomore
Alexa Houston (Sussex Central H.S./Georgetown, Del.).
But, the Griffins held Goldey-Beacom to just one hit over the final 1.2 innings to hold on for the victory.
Freshman
Megan Kehr (Downingtown East H.S./Exton, Pa.) gave Chestnut Hill an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when she hit a two-run double to center field. But, the Lightning cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning when junior outfielder
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) drove in a run with a single to right field.
The Griffins used another big inning in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 6-1 by scoring four runs on four hits. Heaton walked and scored after a throwing error by Zaccaria with no outs. After a ground out by freshman
Emily Soller (The John Carroll School/Bel Air, Md.), Chestnut Hill used four consecutive singles to add three more runs for a five-run advantage.
A two-run single by Williams in the top of the sixth inning lifted the Griffins' cushion to 8-1 as they limited the Lightning to just four hits over the final four innings en route to the win.
While Heaton led the Griffins with her five-hit effort, Mattaliano also contributed five hits and drove in three runs while scoring twice. In addition, Raub had four hits, including a 3-for-4 effort in the second game, while scoring three runs.
Alonzo, who had three hits in the doubleheader, set the Goldey-Beacom career record with the ninth triple of her career during the first game. In addition, it was her sixth triple of the season, which matches the CACC single-season record.
Meanwhile, Schoff contributed four hits, including a 3-for-3 effort with a season-high five runs batted in during the first game.
The Lightning, who were eliminated from CACC Championship consideration with the losses on Sunday, will play their final home games on Wednesday, Apr. 24 with a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Prior to the first game, senior
Ashley Antosh (Twin Valley H.S./Honey Brook, Pa.) will be honored in a special ceremony.
