Game 2
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Freshman pitcher
Kasia Smith (Estrella Foothills H.S./Waddell, Ariz.) had three hits and drove in four runs as Philadelphia University (17-23, 9-11) used an 18-hit attack to earn its second straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference sweep with a pair of victories over Goldey-Beacom College (9-25, 5-15) on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams, who swept Felician on Sunday afternoon, posted a 7-3 victory in the first game before tallying 10 runs en route to a 10-2 triumph in five innings in the nightcap.
Led by freshman infielder
Emilia Cantrell (Central Bucks East H.S./Pipersville, Pa.), the Rams exploded for six consecutive runs in the second and third innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead in the first game. Cantrell gave Philadelphia University a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when she blasted a grand slam to right field for her third home run of the season.
In the bottom of the third inning, sophomore
Samantha Abromavage (Jefferson Township H.S./Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) upped the advantage to 5-0 with an RBI double before a fielder's choice by freshman
Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg H.S./Schaumburg, Ill.) plated another run for the Rams.
The Lightning trimmed the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the fourth inning. After freshman
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.) led off the inning with the first home run of her college career, junior
Courtney Dolson (Gloucester H.S./Gloucester, N.J.) narrowed the margin to 6-2 with two outs with an RBI single up the middle. A double to center field by junior
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) scored Dolson to make it a 6-3 game.
But, the Rams added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kakareka drove in a run with a ground out. From there, Abromavage and the Rams held Goldey-Beacom without a hit in the final three innings to secure the victory.
In the second game, the Rams jumped out to a 6-0 advantage in the first inning after collecting five hits with a pair of Goldey-Beacom errors. Junior
Samantha Riabko (Haddon Township H.S./Haddon Township, N.J.) drove in two runs with a single up the middle with no outs before a double to left center from Smith upped the lead to 4-0.
Kakareka and sophomore
Emma Haley (Jensen Beach H.S./Jensen Beach, Fla.) each added RBI singles to extend the margin to six runs.
After junior
Meaghan Lewis (Chenango Valley H.S./Binghamton, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third inning to increase the lead to 7-0, Smith drove in two more runs with a double to left field for a 9-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth inning, sophomore
Asia Ellis (Lenape H.S./Marlton, N.J.) cut the Lightning's deficit to 9-2 with her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field with two outs.
But, the Rams added their 10th run of the game in the bottom half of the inning when freshman catcher
Mollie Burrell (Souderton Area H.S./Harleysville, Pa.) hit an RBI single to right field.
The Lightning were retired in order in the top of the fifth inning to ensure the eight-run victory for the Rams.
While Smith led the Rams to the pair of victories, Cantrell also drove in four runs while scoring three times with two hits. She also recorded three walks in the doubleheader sweep.
Ellis led the Lightning with two hits and two runs batted in.
The Lightning, who have lost 15 games in a row, will finish their six-game road trip on Wednesday afternoon by traveling to Bloomsburg University for a non-conference doubleheader.
