WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior utility player
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) scattered three hits and earned her second consecutive shutout as Goldey-Beacom College (9-11, 5-3) ended a six-game homestand by splitting a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Post University (9-13, 4-6) at the Lightning's Jackson Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Lightning, who have played 18 of their first 20 games at home, earned a 5-0 victory in the opener before Post used four early runs in the nightcap to take a 4-3 victory.
In the first game, the Lightning exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead they did not relinquish. Freshman second baseman
Madison Newhouser (North Schuylkill H.S./Ashland, Pa.) led off the inning with a single before scoring on a double by sophomore utility player
Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) to give the Lightning a 1-0 advantage.
After freshman catcher
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.) tripled to right field to score Alonzo, sophomore utility player
Asia Ellis (Lenape H.S./Marlton, N.J.) extended the lead to 3-0 when she tripled to right center field.
With two outs in the inning, sophomore outfielder
Alexa Houston (Sussex Central H.S./Georgetown, Del.) singled home Ellis to increase the margin to 4-0 before an RBI single by Peters upped the advantage to 5-0.
From there, Peters held the Eagles to just one hit over the final three innings to earn her third consecutive victory. She recorded three strikeouts and did not walk a batter while upping her record to 3-1.
The Eagles took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game. After an error by the Lightning with two outs scored junior infielder
Christina Udris (Neshaminy H.S./Levittown, Pa.) for a 1-0 lead, junior infielder
Stephanie DeMartino (St. John Villa Academy/Staten Island, N.Y.) extended the advantage with an RBI single up the middle.
In the top of the second inning, the Eagles added two more runs to increase the lead to 4-0. After junior utility player
Stephanie Mendez (White Plains H.S./White Plains, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch with one out, junior outfielder
Jackie Bonamassa (Saint Joseph by the Sea H.S./Staten Island, N.Y.) upped the advantage with two outs by scoring on a passed ball.
But, the Lightning answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to trim the deficit to 4-3. An opposite field double by Newhouser with one out plated the Lightning's first run before Schoff cut the margin to 4-2 with an RBI single to right field.
A fielder's choice by junior third baseman
Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) scored Newhouser from third base to close the gap to 4-3.
But, senior
Johanna Rice (St. Francis Prep/Glendale, N.Y.) was able to record the third out and prevent the Lightning from tying the game. Rice allowed just two hits in the final four innings to secure the victory for the Eagles.
While Peters led the Lightning to the victory in the first game, Ellis recorded three hits in the doubleheader, including a double and a triple. Meanwhile, Schoff and junior outfielder
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.Y.) each collected a pair of hits.
DeMartino, who was held without a hit in the first game, went 4-for-4 in the second game with a run batted in while Bonamassa added two hits.
In upping her record to 4-5, Rice scattered eight hits while striking out three Goldey-Beacom hitters. She posted her team-high seventh complete game of the season.
The Lightning will continue CACC play on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Wilmington University for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, the Eagles will begin a four-game homestand on Tuesday by facing Concordia in a CACC doubleheader.
