WILMINGTON, Del. – Led by a pair of strong pitching efforts from sophomore
Brianna Jennings (Wyalusing
H.S./Wyalusing, Pa.) and senior
Sarah Morse (Dover H.S./Dover, N.H.), Lock Haven University (5-1) extended its win streak to five consecutive games after earning a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader over Goldey-Beacom College (0-2) in the Lightning's season opener at the Jackson Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.
After earning a 7-0 victory in the first game, the Bald Eagles erupted for nine runs in the nightcap to take a 9-0 win over the Lightning.
In the first game, the Bald Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior infielder
Bridgette Clarke (Central Columbia H.S./Bloomsburg, Pa.) scored on a passed ball by freshman catcher
Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.).
Lock Haven upped its lead to 3-0 in the third inning with a pair of runs on an error by sophomore
Asia Ellis (Lenape H.S./Marlton, N.J.) with two outs.
Sophomore infielder
Sarah Schwalm (Central Dauphin H.S./Harrisburg, Pa.) extended the advantage to 4-0 in the fourth inning with a groundout to shortstop that scored Jennings from third base.
After senior catcher
Alicia Cacciotti (Horseheads H.S./Horseheads, N.Y.) hit a two-run double to right center field in the fifth inning, the Bald Eagles increased the margin to 7-0 when senior outfielder
Brittany Favazza (C. Milton Wright H.S./Bel Air, Md.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the sixth inning to score Schwalm.
The Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead in the nightcap when junior
Nicole Smith (Milton H.S./Milton, Pa.) singled to right center field, scoring Clarke from second base.
A double by Jennings in the fourth inning expanded the margin to 2-0 before the Bald Eagles tacked on four more runs for a 6-0 advantage. After Favazza drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Smith blasted a three-run home run to left center field with one out.
The Bald Eagles added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 9-0 cushion they did not relinquish.
Jennings collected four hits in the doubleheader to lead the Bald Eagles, including three doubles. In addition, she allowed just two hits in the first game victory while striking out nine hitters with one walk.
Morse, who improved to 2-1 on the season, struck out nine batters and allowed just three hits en route to earning the complete game victory. Meanwhile, Smith added a pair of hits while driving in four runs.
Junior
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) led the Lightning with two hits while sophomore
Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) had a triple in the second game.
The Lightning, who began a 14-game homestand to open the season, will host East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
