Whiteside Earns Top Spot for Lightning With Seventh Place Effort

Brett Moore finished in a tie for 12th place at the Wilmington University Spring Invitational.

MIDDLETOWN, Del. - Senior Jeff Whiteside (Newark H.S./Bear, Del.) finished in a tie for seventh place as Goldey-Beacom College earned fifth place out of nine teams after the final round of the Wilmington University Spring Invitational at the Back Creek Golf Course on Friday afternoon.

Led by Whiteside, the Lightning posted a team total of 312 in the second round to finish with a two-round total of 630. Meanwhile, the host Wildcats earned the team title after posting a two-round score of 589. Dowling College finished in second place with a 614 (+46) while Nyack College followed in third place with a 616 total score.

Whiteside, who earned his sixth top 10 finish of the season, carded a 76 for the second consecutive round to finish in a tie with Adelphi's Louis Kelly for seventh place.

Meanwhile, freshman Brett Moore (West Kelowna, B.C., Canada) matched his season-low score by posting a 75 in the second round to earn a share of 12th place with Dowling's Kurt Brey and Brandon Romano.

Senior Devon Ripley (Caesar Rodney H.S./Camden, Del.) finished in a tie for 24th place after shooting an 82 in the second round while junior Justin Lesko (St. Mark's H.S./Newark, Del.) followed by posting a score of 79 in the final round to finish tied for 33rd place.

Sophomore Matthew Scheeper (Delsea H.S./Franklinville, N.J.) fired a second-round score of 82 to finish the two-day event in a tie for 35th place. Junior Matthew Japchen (Central Bucks West H.S./New Britain, Pa.), who was competing as an individual, turned in a second round score of 84 to finish tied for 39th place.

The Lightning will be idle until April 9-10 when they compete at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championship at the Whitemarsh Valley Country Club.
