WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior utility player Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) pitched the second shutout of her college career as Goldey-Beacom College (8-10, 4-2) earned a split of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against the University of the Sciences (8-8, 4-2) at the Lightning's Jackson Athletic Complex on Thursday afternoon.

Playing their second doubleheader in as many days, the Lightning earned a 1-0 victory in the first game before the Devils posted an 8-0 victory in six innings in the nightcap.

In the first game, the Lightning scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore utility player Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) hit her CACC-leading fifth triple of the season to center field, which scored junior outfielder Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) from first base.

It was the only run the Lightning needed as Peters retired the final nine batters to complete the shutout. In earning her second consecutive victory, she allowed just one hit while striking out seven University of the Sciences hitters with one walk.

The Devils quickly took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as freshman infielder Jackie Kiefer (Archbishop Prendergast H.S./Aldan, Pa.) drove in a run on a bunt single.

In the second inning, the Devils upped the advantage to 2-0 when freshman Stephanie Fultano (Collingswood H.S./Collingswood, N.J.) hit the first home run of her college career, a solo shot to center field.

The Devils took advantage of a two-out error in the top of the sixth inning to score six more runs, extending the margin to 8-0. After junior Samantha Shaver (E.L. Meyers H.S./Wilkes-Barre Township, Pa.) scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 lead, senior shortstop Haley Kavelak (Middletown H.S./Middletown, Del.) expanded the cushion to 4-0 with an RBI triple to center field.

Kavelak scored on a single to left field by senior outfielder Gabrielle Adams (Chichester H.S./Aston, Pa.) to make it a 5-0 margin before senior designated player Kerrianne Jones (West Chester East H.S./West Chester, Pa.) drove in two more runs with a single to left field.

A single to left field by sophomore utility player Devon DeBellis (Bishop Eustace H.S./Marlton, N.J.) increased the lead to 8-0.

Freshman Cassie Lapotsky (North Schuylkill H.S./Ashland, Pa.) retired the final three Goldey-Beacom hitters in order to earn the second shutout of her college career. She scattered six hits while recording five strikeouts with one walk.

Fultano led the Devils offensively by scoring twice while DeBellis had two hits with a run batted in.

The Lightning, who have won 7 of their last 10 games, will complete their six-game homestand on Saturday afternoon when they face Post University in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, the Devils will face Concordia on Friday afternoon in a CACC doubleheader at 2 p.m.
