Lightning Trying to Extend Win Streak in First Road Games of Season

Freshman Alivia Schoff and the Lightning will play their first road games of the 2013 season on Saturday.

WILMINGTON, Del.
- After playing 12 consecutive home games to open the season, the Goldey-Beacom College softball team will play its first road games of the season on Saturday afternoon when the Lightning visit Bloomfield a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.

The first game between the Lightning and the Deacons is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

Now 5-7 overall and 2-0 in the CACC, the Lightning will bring a four-game win streak into Saturday's games against the Deacons after a doubleheader sweep against Felician on Sunday afternoon. After posting an 8-5 victory in the first game, the Lightning rallied in the final two innings of the nightcap to take an 8-7 triumph over the Golden Falcons.

Junior outfielder Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) led the Lightning against Felician by posting four hits and scoring four runs as the Lightning tallied 21 hits in the two games. Meanwhile, freshman catcher Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.) contributed four hits with a pair of runs batted in while freshman designated player Taylor Ewing (North Dorchester H.S./Hurlock, Md.) had three runs with four runs batted in.

Honored as the CACC Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon, Ewing is the Lightning's leading hitter with a .400 average while freshman second baseman Madison Newhouser (North Schuylkill H.S./Ashland, Pa.) has a team-high 14 hits. In addition, sophomore utility player Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) has already set the Goldey-Beacom single-season record with four triples in the team's first 12 games.

After opening the season with seven consecutive wins, the Deacons will be trying to end a six-game losing streak when they host Goldey-Beacom on Saturday. Now 7-6 overall and 0-2 in the CACC, the Deacons dropped a pair of games against the University of the Sciences on Sunday afternoon. They lost by a 4-1 margin in the first game before a tough 1-0 decision in the second game.

Junior shortstop Angie Yoshizu (University Laboratory H.S./Kaneohe, Hawaii) is the Deacons' leading hitter with a .478 average and 22 base hits while senior outfielder Amanda Svenson (Middletown North H.S./Middletown, N.J.) has tallied two of the Deacons' six home runs this year with a team-high 14 runs batted in.

The teams split a pair of games last year at the Jackson Athletic Complex. After Goldey-Beacom took the first game by a 3-2 margin, the Deacons recovered to earn a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.

The Lightning will return home after Saturday's doubleheader to host Millersville University in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon. It will be the start of a six-game homestand for the Lightning.
