WILMINGTON, Del. – Freshman designated player Taylor Ewing (North Dorchester H.S./Hurlock, Md.) had four hits and drove in four runs to lead Goldey-Beacom College (3-7) to a non-conference doubleheader sweep over Lincoln University (3-4) at the Lightning's Jackson Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

Goldey-Beacom, which had been held to just 10 runs in its first eight games, exploded for a season-high 14 runs en route to a 14-1 victory in five innings in the opener before taking the nightcap by a 9-1 margin in six innings.

In the first game, the Lightning jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first inning. Junior utility player Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) scored the game's first run with one out after an illegal pitch was called on Lincoln sophomore Danielle Owes (Burlington County H.S./Edgewater Park, N.J.), allowing her to score from third base. After a wild pitch by Owes allowed junior outfielder Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) to score, a bases loaded walk by sophomore utility player Asia Ellis (Lenape H.S./Marlton, N.J.) upped the advantage to 3-0.

Junior third baseman Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) drove in two more runs with a double to left field, extending the margin to 5-0 before an RBI groundout by sophomore outfielder Alexa Houston (Sussex Central H.S./Georgetown, Del.) scored Ellis to give Goldey-Beacom a six-run advantage.

The Lions trimmed the margin to 6-1 in the top of the second inning when freshman Toni Smith (William Penn H.S./New Castle, Del.) scored after senior catcher Mariah Liberty (Harwood Union H.S./Waterbury, Vt.) stole second base.

But, Goldey-Beacom added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. After freshman second baseman Madison Newhouser (North Schuylkill H.S./Ashland, Pa.) hit an RBI double to left center field for a 7-1 advantage, she scored on a single by Ewing to left field to expand the margin to 8-1.

In the third inning, the Lightning added six more runs to increase the lead to 14-1. A double down the left field line by Peters scored Houston from second base with one out. After Foster singled to center field to score Peters, she scored on a single up the middle by Newhouser.

Alonzo gave Goldey-Beacom an 11-1 cushion when she blasted a triple to center field, scoring Newhouser from first base. A sacrifice fly by Ewing to center field allowed Alonzo to score before Ellis singled and advanced to second base on an error, which scored freshman catcher Alivia Schoff (Rising Sun H.S./Colora, Md.).

From there, junior Courtney Dolson (Gloucester H.S./Gloucester, N.J.) and the Lightning defense held the Bears without a hit in the final two innings to secure the victory because of the eight-run rule after five innings.

The Lightning jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning of the second game. After three consecutive errors by the Bears to begin the inning gave the Lightning a 2-0 edge, Alonzo hit a triple to center field that scored Newhouser before Ewing drove her in to extend the advantage to 4-0.

Smith opened the fourth inning for the Bears with a triple down the right field line and scored on a throwing error by Newhouser, trimming the Lincoln deficit to 4-1.

But, the Lightning scored five unanswered runs to earn the victory. After Foster upped the lead to 5-1 with an RBI bunt single in the bottom of the fourth inning, Ellis extended the lead with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning that scored Ewing for a 6-1 lead.

With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Foster singled to left center field and scored on a Newhouser double to center field. An opposite field single by Alonzo drove Newhouser in before a double by Ewing allowed Alonzo to score, ending the game due to the eight-run rule.

Dolson, who earned her first win of the season in the first game, posted three strikeouts while scattering a pair of hits over five innings. Meanwhile, senior pitcher Ashley Antosh (Twin Valley H.S./Honey Brook, Pa.) improved to 2-3 on the season after allowing just four hits while matching a season high with six strikeouts.

While Ewing led the Lightning offense, three other players also collected four hits in the doubleheader sweep. Newhouser contributed a pair of doubles and drove in three runs while Foster scored five runs and had two runs batted in. Alonzo, who leads the Lightning with five extra-base hits this season, had a pair of triples with three runs batted in and four runs scored.

Smith and senior Erin Rucker (Shaker Heights H.S./Shaker Heights, Ohio) each had two hits in a losing effort for the Bears, who allowed a season-high 14 runs in the first game.

The Lightning, who won back-to-back games for the first time this season, will wrap up a 12-game homestand on Saturday afternoon by hosting Felician College in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener for both teams. The doubleheader at the Jackson Athletic Complex will begin at 1 p.m.
