WILMINGTON, Del. - Looking to open the season on a positive note, the Goldey-Beacom College softball team will begin its 2013 regular season schedule by hosting Lock Haven University in a pair of non-conference games at the Jackson Athletic Complex on Sunday, Mar. 3 at 12 p.m.
Sunday's doubleheader will mark the start of a stretch which will see the Lightning play 12 of their first 14 games at home. The Lightning's 2013 schedule will feature a total of 26 home games.
The Lightning will enter Sunday's doubleheader with just six returning letter winners from last year's team that posted a 22-23 overall record and a 12-14 mark in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Goldey-Beacom barely missed reaching the CACC Tournament after dropping a pair of conference games at Caldwell College on the final day of the regular season.
Junior outfielder
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) was the Lightning's leading hitter last season with a .366 average after setting a school record with 53 base hits. She also recorded 13 multi-hit games and finished the season with an eight-game hitting streak, hitting .464 with 13 hits in her final 28 at-bats.
Meanwhile, junior pitcher
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) returns as the ace of the Lightning pitching staff after posting a 9-6 record with a 3.50 earned run average. She led the Lightning with 60 strikeouts in 98.0 innings pitched and also contributed a .235 batting average with two home runs and 20 runs batted in.
Currently 1-1 on the early season, the Eagles will be looking to play for the first time this weekend since earning an 8-0 victory over Ohio Valley on Feb. 15 at the Shaw Softball Challenge. However, the Eagles' final four games at the tournament were canceled due to inclement weather.
The Eagles, who will also play at Philadelphia University on Saturday afternoon in a non-league doubleheader, are led by senior outfielder
Brittany Favazza (Kutztown H.S./Kutztown, Pa.). Favazza is hitting .429 in the early part of the season with three hits in seven at-bats after leading the team with a .370 batting average last year. She also led the Eagles with 64 base hits and 40 runs scored.
Meanwhile, senior pitcher
Sarah Morse (Dover H.S./Dover, N.H.) has started both games for the Eagles this season, recording a 0.00 earned run average while recording four strikeouts. In 38 appearances last season, she posted a 19-14 record with a 2.46 earned run average and 101 strikeouts.
After Sunday's doubleheader against the Eagles, the Lightning will travel to East Stroudsburg for a doubleheader against the Warriors on Tuesday, Mar. 5 at 2 p.m.
