WILMINGTON, Del. – Led by a pair of goals from senior midfielder
Ira Woodruff (North Catholic H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.), Holy Family University (6-10-1, 6-6-0) exploded for four goals in the second half to rally from a 2-1 deficit en route to a 5-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Goldey-Beacom College (2-15-1, 1-10-1) in the regular season finale for both teams at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tigers, who snapped a three-match losing streak with the victory, secured a berth in the CACC Tournament, which will begin on Nov. 4. However, the Tigers' seed in the eight-team field will not be determined until after the regular season ends on Saturday afternoon.
The Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute when freshman midfielder
Pablo Millan (Zaragoza, Spain) scored the first goal of his college career on a shot from a sharp angle after receiving a short corner kick from senior midfielder
William Miller (Meadowcreek H.S./Norcross, Ga.).
Just over two minutes later, senior midfielder
Andre Jank (Campo Grande, Brazil) upped the Goldey-Beacom advantage to 2-0 when he took a pair of quick passes from freshman midfielder
Erik Tapper (Linkoping, Sweden) and junior forward
Luiz Ristow (Joinville, Brazil) and scored his team-high eighth goal of the season.
But, the Tigers answered with 6:09 remaining in the first half when senior midfielder
Ahmed Elgayar (Central H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) converted a penalty kick for his third goal of the season.
In the 63rd minute, Woodruff narrowed the gap to 3-2 when he took a long pass from sophomore goalkeeper
Richard Ongaro (Notre Dame H.S./Columbus, N.J.) off a restart and scored his first goal of the season.
With 13:16 remaining in regulation, freshman midfielder
Justin Hiltwine (Father Judge H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied the first goal of his career when he collected a loose ball inside the penalty area and scored past senior goalkeeper
Carlos Meinhard (Caracas, Venezuela), tying the match at 3-3.
Woodruff gave Holy Family a 4-3 lead it did not relinquish with 4:09 remaining when he took a crossing pass from sophomore forward
Aiah Mbriwa (Philmont Christian Academy/Abington, Pa.) and scored on an open shot in the penalty area.
With 1:20 left, sophomore defender
Tom Kostick (Roman Catholic H.S./Philadelphia, Pa.) added an insurance goal when he scored on a restart from 20 yards for his first goal of the season.
While Woodruff led the Tigers' offense with two goals, Ongaro tallied three saves for Holy Family, which held Goldey-Beacom to just nine shots.
Meinhard made seven saves for the Lightning, who ended the season with a 10-match winless streak.
The loss marked the final college matches for Jank, Meinhard, Miller, senior midfielder
Dylan Pepper (Sussex Tech H.S./Milton, Del.), senior forward
Charles Netya (Glasgow H.S./Newark, Del.) and graduate student forward
Kyle Lawrence (Smyrna H.S./Smyrna, Del.). All six players started for the Lightning against Holy Family.
