PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior forward
Akilah Sewell (Baltimore City College H.S./Baltimore, Md.) scored a season-high 16 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Goldey-Beacom College (14-8, 11-2) to its fourth straight win, a 73-57 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the University of the Sciences at the Devils' Bobby Morgan Arena on Tuesday evening.
Sewell, who posted her first “double double” of the season, made six of eight shots from the floor and all four of her free throw attempts as the Lightning avenged a 65-61 overtime loss against the Devils on Nov. 20 at the Jones Center.
After the Lightning took an early 5-0 lead in the opening 90 seconds of the first half, the Devils answered by scoring eight consecutive points to take an 8-5 advantage on a jumper by senior guard
Elsebeth Birman (St. John's College H.S./Silver Spring, Md.) with 14:49 remaining in the stanza.
The Lightning used back-to-back baskets from seniors
Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman H.S./Levittown, Pa.) and
Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) to regain the edge at 9-8 before the Devils scored 9 of the next 14 points to take a 17-14 cushion with 7:32 left in the first half.
But, the Lightning used a 12-2 run over a three-minute span, including a pair of three-point baskets from senior guard
Jacinda Jones (Concord H.S./Claymont, Del.), to take a 26-19 lead with 2:35 left before the intermission.
The Devils scored 10 of the final 15 points in the first half, including eight points from sophomore guard
Jessica Sylvester (Nazareth Academy/Trevose, Pa.), to narrow the margin to 31-29.
Led by seven points from senior forward
Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.), the Lightning scored 9 of the first 14 points to open the second half, upping their advantage to 40-35 with 17:10 left in the period.
After a lay-up from sophomore guard
Brianne Traub (Eastern Christian H.S./Wayne, N.J.) trimmed the Devils' deficit to 40-37, the Lightning used an 18-6 run, including seven points from Sewell, to extend their lead to 58-43 with 8:44 remaining in the game.
But, the Devils answered as Birman scored eight consecutive points to trim the margin to 58-51 with 7:30 remaining before the Lightning scored six of the next seven points to regain a 12-point advantage with 4:53 left.
The Lightning secured the victory by ending the game on a 9-3 spurt.
While Sewell led the Lightning to the victory, Jones contributed 14 points after making four of seven three-point field goals and both of her free throws. In addition, Richardson added 13 points with six rebounds and three assists.
One of four USciences players to score in double figures, Birman led the Devils with 16 points in a losing effort while contributing three steals. Meanwhile, Traub nearly recorded a “double double” with 12 points and 9 rebounds.
The Lightning, who have won 11 of their last 14 games, will return to the Joseph West Jones College Center on Saturday, Feb. 2 when they host Felician in a CACC game at 1 p.m.
