WILMINGTON, Del. - After scoring a season-high four goals in its win over Washington Adventist University on Tuesday afternoon, the Lightning men's soccer team will try to win back-to-back games for the first time this season when Goldey-Beacom hosts Concordia in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The match, which is slated for a 3 p.m. kick-off, will be the second match in a soccer doubleheader on Saturday. The Lightning women's soccer team will host the Clippers in the first match at 1 p.m.
Now 2-5-0 overall and 0-4-0 in the CACC, the Lightning snapped a five-match losing streak with their 4-0 victory over the Shock on Tuesday afternoon. Junior forward
Thatcher Howell (Salesnianum H.S./Wilmington, Del.) and senior defender
Mariano Olcese (Lima, Peru) each scored a goal and added an assist as the Lightning earned their first win since a 2-1 victory in the season opener at Saint Rose on Aug. 31.
Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper
Ignacio Farias (Maracay, Venezuela) and junior goalkeeper
Carlos Meinhard (Caracas, Venezuela) combined to make five saves in the victory as the Lightning outshot Washington Adventist by a 16-11 margin.
Howell is the Lightning's leading scorer with four points, including a goal with two assists while Olcese is second with three points. Six different players have scored a goal for the Lightning this seaso. Meanwhile, Farias has started the last five matches and has posted a 2.27 goals against average while stopping 73.8 per cent of the shots he has faced.
Off to a 2-6-1 start, the Clippers will also be searching for their first CACC win of the season on Saturday after dropping a 3-1 verdict against Post University on Wednesday afternoon. It was the Clippers' fourth loss in their last five matches.
Sophomore midfielder
Jesus Alvarez-Riesco (La Coruna, Spain) led the Clippers with his second goal of the season on Wednesday afternoon while freshman goalkeeper
Ruel Gordon (Savanna La Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica) had four saves.
Junior forward
Ekene Okereke (Beliefield, Germany) leads the Clippers with four goals while Alvarez-Riesco has added two goals with an assist. Gordon has started six games for the Clippers this season, posting a 1.77 goals against average with an .807 save percentage.
The Clippers edged the Lightning by a 1-0 margin in last year's meeting at Nancy Churchman-Sawin Field. A goal by
Richard Heredia in the 73rd minute provided the difference for the Clippers, who outshot the Lightning by a 24-16 margin. Farias made eight saves in a losing effort for the Lightning.
After Saturday's match, the Lightning will finish their homestand by hosting Shippensburg University in a non-conference match at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 3 p.m.
