NEW CASTLE, Del.
– Led by a goal and an assist from junior Thatcher Howell (Salesnianum H.S./Wilmington, Del.) and senior Mariano Olcese (Lima, Peru), Goldey-Beacom College (2-5-0) exploded for a season-high four goals en route to snapping a five-match losing streak with a 4-0 non-conference victory over Washington Adventist University (2-4-0) at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lightning, who had not scored during the five-match losing streak, posted their first win since a season-opening 2-1 victory at the College of Saint Rose on Aug. 31. Meanwhile, the Shock suffered their third loss in the last four matches.

Just over three minutes into the match, sophomore defender Terah Garnett (Smyrna H.S./Smyrna, Del.) gave Goldey-Beacom a 1-0 lead when he scored his first goal of the season by heading in a corner kick by Olcese.

With 25:39 remaining in the first half, Olcese upped the Lightning advantage to 2-0 when he scored his first goal of the season after collecting a loose ball in the penalty area.

Junior midfielder Dylan Pepper (Sussex Tech H.S./Milton, Del.) extended the lead to 3-0 in the 43rd minute when he headed in a corner kick by Howell.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Howell added an insurance goal for the Lightning when he scored from a sharp angle along the end line for his first marker of the season.

The Shock had their best chance to score in the 23rd minute when Goldey-Beacom was called for a foul inside the penalty area, giving Washington Adventist a penalty kick. However, junior midfielder Zerubabel Beyene (Ewing, N.J.) had his attempt stopped by senior goalkeeper Ignacio Farias (Maracay, Venezuela) to preserve the shutout.

Farias made five saves in 77 minutes for the Lightning before being replaced by junior goalkeeper Carlos Meinhard (Caracas, Venezuela), who did not have to make a save.

Senior goalkeeper Daniel Olofinsua (Memphis, Tenn.) made five saves in a losing effort for the Shock, who were outshot by a 16-11 margin.

However, Washington Adventist held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks over the Lightning.

The Lightning will continue their three-match homestand on Saturday afternoon when they host Concordia College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match at the Kirkwood Soccer Complex at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, Washington Adventist will host Valley Forge Christian on Thursday afternoon.
