WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior shortstop
Julie Plante (Joseph Case H.S./Swansea, Mass.) posted four hits and scored four runs as Dominican College (22-16, 16-0) ended a four-game losing streak by sweeping a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader from Goldey-Beacom College (16-17, 6-8) at the Lightning's Jackson Athletic Complex on Monday afternoon.
After earning an 11-1 victory over the Lightning in the first game, the Chargers overcome an early deficit in the nightcap by scoring 10 unanswered runs en route to a 10-1 decision in five innings.
The Lightning took a quick 1-0 lead with two outs in the first inning when sophomore
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) hit an RBI double to left center field.
But, the Chargers answered by scoring four runs on three hits in the second inning. After junior
Brielle Kerscher (Moore Catholic H.S./Staten Island, N.Y.) tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double down the left field line, Plante gave Dominican a 2-1 advantage with an infield bunt single. Senior
Deidre Jeppson (Birmingham H.S./Sylmar, Calif.) upped the cushion to 4-1 with a two-run double to left field.
After Kerscher extended the Chargers' lead to 5-1 with a sacrifice fly in the third inning, sophomore
Paige Berzak (Pacifica H.S./Cypress, Calif.) added two more runs with a single to center field for a 7-1 advantage in the fourth inning.
The Chargers used a double by Plante to increase the margin to 8-1 in the fifth inning before adding three runs in the sixth inning for a commanding 11-1 lead.
In the nightcap, the Lightning gained another early lead in the first inning when senior
Danie Rice (Kingsway Regional H.S./Mullica Hill, N.J.) hit an RBI single through the left side to score senior
Shannon Graves (Glassboro H.S./Glassboro, N.J.) from second base.
But, the Chargers responded in the second inning by scoring seven runs on just three hits while taking advantage of two Goldey-Beacom errors. After sophomore
Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun Valley H.S./Loudoun, Va.) scored to tie the game on a Lightning error, Berzak scored on another error to give Dominican a 2-1 lead.
An RBI groundout by senior
Ashley Martinez (Bloomfield H.S./Bloomfield, N.J.) upped the Chargers' cushion to 3-1 before Plante tripled to right center field for another run. Plante scored on a passed ball for a 5-1 advantage before Jeppson scored on a wild pitch.
Wassmann upped the Chargers' advantage to 7-1 when she reached on a fielder's choice to score junior
Ashley Corrao (Tottenville H.S./Staten Island, N.Y.).
The Chargers added two more runs in the third inning on a two-out double by junior
Delaney Childers (Johnstown-Monroe H.S./Johnstown, Ohio). With one out in the fifth inning, Corrao gave Dominican a 10-1 lead when she singled to left field.
After going 2-for-5 in the first game with two RBIs, Plante scored three runs in the nightcap while collecting two hits. Meanwhile, Childers limited the Lightning to just one unearned run on six hits in the first game while lowering her CACC-leading earned run average to 0.63. She has allowed just 11 earned runs this season in 122.2 innings.
Berzak also collected three hits for the Chargers, who exploded for 21 runs on 24 hits in the two-game sweep.
Rice led the Lightning in a losing effort with three hits in four at-bats while Graves became the ninth player in school history to reach 100 career base hits with a pair of hits.
The Lightning, which fell to ninth place in the CACC standings, will travel to Holy Family on Wednesday afternoon for a CACC doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, the Chargers will host Wilmington University on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Lightning Strikes: Rice extended her hitting streak to six straight games … Meanwhile, sophomore
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) had her 13-game hitting streak snapped by going 0-for-3 in the first game … However, she rebounded and hit her first triple of the season in the nightcap … Foster, who is the Lightning's leading hitter with a .362 average, has a hit in 23 of her last 27 games … Peters has a hit in four consecutive games … Goldey-Beacom is now 6-4 at home this season, but play six of its next eight games at the Jackson Athletic Complex.
