Softball Returns Home for Monday Doubleheader Against Dominican

Lightning Looks to Improve Playoff Chances Against CACC-Leading Chargers

Katrina Swank and the Lightning will host the CACC-leading Chargers on Monday.
WILMINGTON, Del. – After splitting a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games against Post University on Friday afternoon, the Goldey-Beacom College softball team returns home on Monday afternoon for a doubleheader against CACC-leading Dominican College at the Jackson Athletic Complex.

The first game is slated to begin at 3 p.m. with the second game beginning approximately 30 minutes after the first game ends.

Now 16-15 overall and 6-6 in the CACC, the Lightning has lost three of its last four games after splitting the doubleheader against the Eagles on Friday afternoon. After earning a 3-1 victory in the first game, Post overcame a 4-0 deficit to earn a 6-5 victory to salvage a split in the nightcap.

Sophomore pitcher Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) led the Lightning in Friday's split at Post. After scattering six hits en route to pitching a complete game in the 3-1 victory, Peters recorded three hits and drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap loss. Meanwhile, sophomore outfielder Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) extended her hitting streak to 13 games by posting a hit in each game, including a 2-for-3 performance in the second game.

Foster, who is tied with freshman Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) with a .370 batting average, has tallied 16 hits during her current 13-game hitting streak, including three two-hit games in her last five outings. She has tallied a hit in 22 of her last 25 games after batting .176 in her first six games this year.

Meanwhile, Peters has played very well over the last nine games by recording a .375 batting average with a hit in seven of those nine outings. She also has six runs batted in during the last nine games, including three in the doubleheader against Post on Friday.

Off to a 20-12 start, the Chargers will bring a perfect 14-0 CACC record into Monday's doubleheader against the Lightning. However, Dominican has lost four of its last six games after being swept in a non-conference doubleheader against UMass-Lowell on Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers dropped an 8-0 verdict in the first game before being edged by 11-9 in the nightcap.

Junior Delaney Childers (Johnstown-Monroe H.S./Johnstown, Ohio) is the Chargers' leading hitter with a .422 average, which ranks fourth in the CACC. She has recorded a hit in five of her last seven games, including a three-hit performance in the Chargers' 12-0 win over Chestnut Hill last Tuesday.

In addition, Childers is the CACC's top pitcher with a 0.67 earned run average while posting a 12-6 record. She has allowed just 11 earned runs in 115.2 innings this season while posting eight shutouts. Childers, who has been honored by the CACC three times this season, has struck out 117 opposing hitters while allowing just eight walks.

After Monday's home doubleheader, the Lightning will travel to Holy Family for a CACC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon before opening a six-game homestand on Saturday afternoon against Concordia at 1 p.m.

Lightning Strikes: The Lightning have played just eight games at home this season, but have a 6-2 record … Senior outfielder Shannon Graves (Glassboro H.S./Glassboro, N.J.) needs just two hits to become the ninth player in Goldey-Beacom history to record 100 career hits … Along with Foster, seniors Cailin Cavanaugh (Newark H.S./Newark, Del.) and Jordan Waterloo (Thomas Stone H.S./Waldorf, Md.) have started all 31 games for the Lightning this season … Alonzo ranks fourth in the CACC with 27 runs batted in this season, which is also the second-highest total in school history … In 2010, current senior Danie Rice (Kingsway Regional H.S./Mullica Hill, N.J.) drove in a school-record 40 runs … Foster needs just three hits to become the 12th player in school history to amass 40 base hits in a season … The Chargers have won 20 or more games in five straight seasons.
