NEWTOWN, Pa. – Senior outfielder Cailin Cavanaugh (Newark H.S./Newark, Del.) hit a pair of solo home runs to lead the Goldey-Beacom College softball team (17-18, 7-9) to a split of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Holy Family University (17-17, 10-8) at the Tigers' Helen Randle Field on Wednesday afternoon.

After the Lightning edged Holy Family by a 4-3 margin in the first game, the Tigers salvaged a split in the second game by posting a 9-0 victory in five innings.

Cavanaugh became the first Goldey-Beacom player to hit two home runs in the same game since current senior Danie Rice (Kingsway Regional H.S./Mullica Hill, N.J.) connected on a pair of three-run home runs in a win over Lincoln University (Pa.) on April 8, 2010 at the Jackson Athletic Complex.

In leading the Lightning to the victory in the first game on Wednesday, Cavanaugh gave Goldey-Beacom a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run to center field. In the fourth inning, she upped the lead to 2-0 with her third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.

But, the Tigers responded with three straight runs to take a 3-2 lead. After trimming the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning on a single by junior third baseman Lindsey Iden (Council Rock North H.S./Rushland, Pa.), Holy Family used a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning for a one-run edge.

However, the Lightning stormed back in the top of the sixth inning with two runs to regain a 4-3 advantage. After senior Jordan Waterloo (Thomas Stone H.S./Waldorf, Md.) tied the game on an RBI single, sophomore third baseman Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) singled to score Cavanaugh, giving Goldey-Beacom the lead.

From there, sophomore pitcher Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) retired six straight Holy Family hitters to thwart the Tigers' comeback attempt and earn her seventh win of the season.

In the nightcap, the Tigers took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior shortstop Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown H.S./Williamstown, N.J.) scored an unearned run on a passed ball.

Holy Family broke the game open in the second inning by scoring five runs on three hits. After a triple by senior second baseman Katherine Cohen (Eastern H.S./Voorhees, N.J.) extended the advantage to 3-0, sophomore Samantha Borrelli (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) connected on her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to give Holy Family a commanding 6-0 cushion.

Iden upped the Tigers' lead to 7-0 in the third inning when she scored an unearned run on a passed ball before Holy Family increased the margin in the fourth inning on a two-run single by sophomore Erin Corrado (St. Mark's H.S./Fair Hill, Md.).

Led by sophomore Rachel Alligood (Harry S. Truman H.S./Levittown, Pa.), the Tigers limited Goldey-Beacom to just three hits en route to the victory. Alligood, who improved to 4-3 on the season, struck out five Lightning hitters while not allowing a walk.

Cavanaugh, who now has six career home runs, led the Lightning in the doubleheader by going 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Meanwhile, Waterloo had two hits with a run batted in.

Iden led the Tigers in the doubleheader split by going 2-for 6 with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Lightning will return to the Jackson Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon to open a six-game homestand with a doubleheader against Concordia at 1 p.m. Prior to the first game, the team will celebrate Senior Day and honor its seven seniors.

Meanwhile, Holy Family will host CACC-leading Dominican on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
