WILMINGTON, Del. – Looking to rebound from a pair of tough losses against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference-leading Dominican on Monday afternoon, the Goldey-Beacom College softball team will visit Holy Family University on Wednesday afternoon for a pair of CACC games.
The first game at Helen Randle Park is scheduled for 3 p.m. while the second game will begin approximately 20 minutes after the completion of the first game.
Now 16-17 overall and 6-8 in the CACC, the Lightning currently stand in ninth place in the conference standings after losing a pair of league games against the Chargers on Monday afternoon. After falling by an 11-1 margin in six innings in the first game, the Lightning dropped a 10-1 decision in five innings in the nightcap.
Senior catcher
Danie Rice (Kingsway Regional H.S./Mullica Hill, N.J.) led the Lightning against Dominican by posting three hits in four at-bats while senior outfielder
Shannon Graves (Glassboro H.S./Glassboro, N.J.) became the ninth player in school history to record 100 career base hits when she singled to left field in the first inning of the second game.
Meanwhile, sophomore outfielder
Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) had her 13-game hitting streak snapped in the first game after going hitless in three at-bats. However, she hit her first triple of the season in the nightcap and has posted a hit in 23 of her last 27 games.
Foster is the Lightning's leading hitter with a .362 average and a team-high 38 hits. Freshman shortstop
Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketcham H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) ranks second on the team with a .361 average and a team-high 27 runs batted in.
The Lightning have also been aided by the solid play of sophomore
Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.), who has a 6-4 record as a pitcher while hitting .250 this season with two home runs and 17 runs batted in. Over the last 11 games, she has hit .379 with 11 hits and seven runs batted in. Against Post on Friday afternoon, she tallied a season-high three hits in a 6-5 loss.
Currently 16-16 overall and 9-7 in the CACC, the Tigers have lost four of their last five games after splitting a conference doubleheader against Bloomfield on Monday afternoon. After winning the first game by an 8-3 margin, the Tigers were edged by a 2-1 verdict in the second game.
In the first game, the Tigers overcame an early 1-0 deficit with eight unanswered runs en route to the 8-3 victory. Sophomore
Samantha Borrelli (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) led the Tigers to the victory by hitting her first home run of the season with a grand slam in the fourth inning. Meanwhile, sophomore pitcher
Victoria Reuscher (Little Flower H.S. for Girls/Cheltenham, Pa.) scattered five hits and allowed three runs while earning her ninth win of the season.
Despite a solo home run by senior
Cassandra Fitzgerald-Black (Fr. Leo J. Austin C.S.S./Whitby, Ontario) in the second game, the Holy Family offense could not continue the performance from the first game as the Tigers fell by a one-run margin. It was the 21st home run of Fitzgerald-Black's career, which is a school record.
Junior shortstop
Danielle McDevitt (Williamstown H.S./Williamstown, N.J.) is the Tigers' leading hitter with a .412 average. She also has a team-high 32 hits and ranks second on the team with 12 runs scored. Meanwhile, senior outfielder
Bianca Robinson (Timber Creek H.S./Erial, N.J.) has a .267 batting average with 27 hits, including four doubles.
Reuscher has started 18 games for the Tigers this season and has a 9-7 record with a 1.57 earned run average, which ranks third in the CACC. She has allowed just 25 earned runs in 111.2 innings this season and has 24 strikeouts.
After Wednesday's doubleheader, the Lightning will return home on Saturday to begin a six-game homestand against Concordia at the Jackson Athletic Complex at 1 p.m. Goldey-Beacom will also host Bloomfield and Philadelphia University during the homestand.
