Softball Earns Doubleheader Split With Millersville

Zaccaria Drives in Game-Winning Runs in 5th Inning of First Game

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Sophomore third baseman Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) drove in the game-winning runs with a double in the fifth inning of the first game as the Goldey-Beacom College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Millersville University at the MU Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.

After the Lightning won the first game by a 3-2 margin, the Marauders responded by winning the nightcap, 5-1.

Trailing by 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning in the opener, Zaccaria gave the Lightning a one-run advantage when she hit a double with two outs in the fifth inning that scored two runs. From there, senior Shannon O'Hara (LaPlata H.S./LaPlata, Md.) and sophomore Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) combined to retire nine straight Millersville hitters to give Goldey-Beacom the victory.

The Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Zaccaria scored on a Millersville error, but the Marauders answered in the bottom of the inning when freshman Danielle DeFilippo (Hatboro-Horsham H.S./Hatboro, Pa.) scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jamie Motsko (Parkland H.S./Breinigsville, Pa.).

Motsko gave Millersville a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when she hit her first home run of the season, a solo shot off O'Hara to set up the late-inning heroics by the Lightning.

In the nightcap, the Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Zaccaria singled to left field, scoring senior Shannon Graves (Glassboro H.S./Glassboro, N.J.) from second base. However, the Marauders evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Ashley Cantiello (Bristol H.S./Bristol, Pa.) hit an RBI single.

The Marauders broke the tie in the fifth inning by scoring four runs on four hits for a commanding 5-1 lead. After freshman Gabbie Berry (Norristown Area H.S./Norristown, Pa.) hit a two-run double to give Millersville a 3-1 advantage, she scored on a single by DeFilippo for a 4-1 edge.

With two outs in the inning, freshman Alexandra Hoops (Crestwood H.S./Mountain Top, Pa.) upped the cushion to four runs when she singled to score DeFilippo.

The Lightning threatened in the top of the sixth inning by getting two runners on base, but Goldey-Beacom could not take advantage.

Zaccaria led the Lightning in the doubleheader by going three-for-five with three runs batted in and a run scored. Meanwhile, sophomore Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) recorded a hit in each game to extend her hitting streak to seven straight games. She has posted a hit in 16 of her last 19 games.

Motsko and Berry each drove in two runs for the Marauders, who were playing their second doubleheader in as many days.

The Lightning, which has played six straight road games, will return home on Tuesday afternoon to host Nyack College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at the Jackson Athletic Complex. The first game is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
