Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Freshman shortstop Samantha Alonzo (Roy C. Ketchum H.S./Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) drove in the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning of the first game as Goldey-Beacom College (12-11, 3-3) earned a split of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader over the University of the Sciences (8-12, 6-6) at the Devils' McNeil Field on Friday afternoon.

After Goldey-Beacom won the opener by a 2-1 margin in eight innings, the Devils answered with a convincing 11-2 victory in the nightcap to salvage the doubleheader split.

In the first game, the Devils took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore catcher SamanthaLou Anastasio (St. Joseph by the Sea H.S./Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

But, the Lightning answered in the top of the fourth inning when freshman Alexa Houston (Sussex Central H.S./Georgetown, Del.) reached base on a dropped fly ball, which allowed senior Cailin Cavanaugh (Newark H.S./Newark, Del.) to score and tie the game at 1-1.

With two outs in the top of the eighth inning, Alonzo gave Goldey-Beacom its first lead of the game when she singled to score sophomore Ashley Zaccaria (Gloucester City H.S./Gloucester City, N.J.) from second base for a 2-1 advantage they did not relinquish.

The Devils wasted little time in the second game by scoring two runs in the first inning. After junior Erin Summers (Pitman H.S./Pitman, N.J.) reached base on a Lightning error that scored a run, the Devils upped the advantage to 2-0 when Anastasio hit an RBI single to right field.

However, the Lightning answered with a run in the top of the second inning when senior Roni Peters (Leonardtown H.S./Leonardtown, Md.) drove in Cavanaugh with a double down the left field line.

But, the Devils took advantage of three Lightning errors in the bottom of the second inning to score four more runs, upping their cushion to 6-1.

In the third inning, the University of the Sciences broke the game open by scoring five times to extend its advantage to 11-1. After junior Kerrianne Jones (West Chester East H.S./West Chester, Pa.) drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk, junior Haley Kavelak (Middletown H.S./Middletown, Del.) added to the Devils' advantage with a two-run single up the middle.

The Devils added two more runs on walks with the bases loaded for an 11-1 lead.

The Lightning trimmed the deficit to 11-2 in the top of the fifth inning when sophomore Michelle Foster (Overbrook H.S./West Berlin, N.J.) drove in a run on a single to center field. However, Goldey-Beacom was unable to get any closer.

Jones led the Devils to the doubleheader sweep by going three-for-seven with four runs scored and two runs batted in. Meanwhile, DeBellis had two hits in the doubleheader along with two runs and two runs batted in.

Alonzo had three hits to lead the Lightning while driving in a run in the first game while Foster extended her hitting streak to five straight games with a hit in each contest.

Senior pitcher Shannon O'Hara (LaPlata H.S./LaPlata, Md.) pitched four innings of scoreless relief in the first game to earn her third win of the season. She scattered four hits with one strikeout.

The Lightning, which is in the middle of a week-long road trip, will return to action on Sunday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader at Millersville University. The first game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
